a celebratory sideline after one on Friday nights homecoming at Ranger Stadium Valley blanks Burbank 490 moves to 30 ByROBERT STEWART Special to the HeraldZeitung The Ranger faithful could have not have had a better homecoming Friday as Sirathson Valley rolled to a 490 victory over the Burbank Bulldogs Its your first win at home and I think our kids were excited to be at home We hada real good crowd and I think it livened things up a little said Larry Hill head coach We were pretty focused coming in We came out and took care of Running back Tim Ivey who topped theIOOyard mark for his third consec got the scoring going on Smlibson Valleys opening drive in the firsfrjuarter converting a oneyard run remaining Billy Grindles gave the Rangers a 70 lead The ninfeplay drive followed a Burbank openingdrive punt Valley got the ball back rigjjt away when Billy Grindle recov eredBurbank quarterback Paul Tejedas furpbje at the Ranger 41 The Rangers weleiunable to capitalize on the turnover andturned the ball over on downs at the Bgjfeank 32 ifturbank gave the ball right back when Mtejiael Banda fumbled and Bart RcdiFmeier recovered The Rangers did capitalize this time going 49 yards in 12 plays scoring on a lOryard touchdown pass from quarter back Sean Everest to Travis Smith with remaining in the half Grindles kitk made the score 140 Rangers The Ranger defense stymied Burbank all night causing the Bulldogs to fumble five times losing three They also were forced to punt five times We knew that they did a good job on their short passing game and the draw play and I was real pleased with the way our kids contained them We worked real hard on Hill said Their kids could move and a couple of times they got away from us but allinall it was a Defensively Billy Grindle had nine tackles Brad Tellander had seven Bart Rohlmeir Brandon Schulz Greg Markham and Brian Henderson each had six Reeves had five and Warchol had four B i three of Burbank s fumbles He Grindle did a real good job in the Hill said I think he had one of his best game of the year in the Grindle also kicked seven extra points following touchdowns That was the best we looked on Hill said It was good to see the snap hold and kick protection all seem to come Burbank gave Smithson VaUey anoth er gift on the next drive when the quar terback fumbled and set Smithson Valley up at their own 45 as Brad Tellander recovered The Rangers marched 55 yards in four plays to score when Everest hit Philip Mangan for a 24yard touchdown pass Grindles kick made the score 210 with left before halftime A key play in the drive included a 17yard Ivey run Smithson Valley received the second half kickoff and proceeded to put the game away Ivey had rushes totaling 44 yards in the drive while Everest hit Sam Teuton on a 10yard pass to set up first and goal at the eight Everest ended up running it in from one yard out with left in the third quarter Grindles kick made the score 280 The teams then exchanged punts on the next two drives with Burbank getting a glimmer of hope by pinning Smithson Valley back on the Ranger one yard line on Paul Tejedas punt The Rangers were unfazed however and proceeded to end any faint thoughts of a Burbank comeback with a 99yard touchdown drive I think itall worked Hill said We played pretty well and kind of broke their spirit at the end there with the 99yard Everest hit Brad Triesch to get the ball out to the 15 where a facemask penalty tacked on another five yards Reeves in relief of Ivey then ran to the 36 Reeves continued to get the call running to the 39 the 47 and then on third down all the way to the Burbank six yard line A flag moved the ball to the Bulldog three and Reeves did the honors by taking it in for the score with left in the fourth Grindle again hit the pointafter kick to make the score 350 Reeves finished the night with eight carries for 76 yards In our offense youve got to have more than one good ball Hill See RANGERS page 11A 38 Physicians 15
