The Cougarettes (14-1) defeated the New Braunfels Unicorns 15-8,15-8 in the finals of the Austin-McNeil Tournament on Saturday. Eight teams competed in the tournament. "The girls came through with another big tournament performance," said Canyon coach Donna Boehle. "They arc playing real well as a unit and using defense to get the offense going." Canyon outside hitter Elizabeth Weis-man was named tournament’s Most Valuable Player. She finished with 13 digs and five kills in the finals. Senior setter Kim Brunette and senior outside hitter Lesa Porter earned all-tournament honors, along with New Braunfels senior middle blocker Erin Baetge and Shelley Bredewater. Freshman outside hitter Tiffany Wei-dner led Canyon in the finals with seven kills. Shannon Young and Porter recorded six kills each. Brunette led all players with assists, while Young was the top server with seven consecutive points. Kendra Reinter came through with six aces on serve. New Braunfels (8-3) reached the finals by knocking off McCallum in the semifinals. On Friday, the Unicorns made it through the pool competition against Anderson, McNeil and Rockdale. Canyon beat Austin Anderson, 15-2, 15-1 in the semifinals. The Cougarettes' next game is Tuesday in a tri-match with Boerne and Providence. New Braunfels has an open date before playing in the Kerrville Tivy Tournament. From staff reports The defending state champion New Braunfels varsity girls cross country team finished in first place at the Seguin meet on Saturday. The Unicorns garnered 44 points to edge Round Rock by three points. Marshall finished third with HO points, followed by Clark, 153, and Alamo Heights, 180. Thirty teams competed in the meet. New Braunfels coach Noel Hansen said the showing was one of the best in recent years for the Unicorns. "In the eight years I've been here, I don't think we've ever done this well with our top seven runners," Hansen. "The girls stepped it up a notched and finished real strong over the last IOO yards to move us up a couple of places. That allowed us to get past Round Rock." Jessica Koch, the defending state champion, was the first place winner. New Braunfels girls' team, which could make history by taking their third consecutive state title this season, had four runners finish in the top IO on Saturday. They were led by Karin Meder who placed fourth with a time of 11:41 over the two mile course. Kelly Koksma finished seventh in a time of 11:48. Bethany Carl was ninth at 11:53. Kelly Clark came in 17th place with a time of 12:15. Jodi Slaughter was 19th at 12:20 In the varsity boys division, New Braunfels finished ninth with 256 points. Round Rock scored 66 points to take first place. San Antonio Jefferson came in third with 123, followed by Converse Judson, 145, and Churchill, 165. Jeff Garsnett led the Unicom boys team by placing 14th with a time of 17:20 over the three mile course. The junior varsity girls team took first place with 72 points. Clark was second with 107, followed by Round Rock with 108.
