Agriculture Commissioner Rick Perry to speak to Republican club at Gruene Hall Texas Agricultural Commissioner Rick Perry will be the guest speaker at Gruene Hall Sept. 18, beginning at 6 p.m. with hospitality hour. Commissioner Perry will speak on such issues as property rights, less government and more effective government, and the opportunity for conservative control of Texas in 1996. Sponsored by the New Braunfels Republican Women, this special night will also include entertainment and a delicious barbecue dinner. Rick Perry surprised political watchers with an upset victory in 1990, defeating a 2-year incumbent. He currently is serving his second term as agriculture commissioner, and has proven in numerous ways that he is the right man for the job. Perry has worked diligently at the department to represent agriculture’s interests across Texas and the nation. In 1991, he was selected to serve on the U.S. Trade Advisory Committee on International Trade. As a member of this group, he worked closely with the U.S. team to draft the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA). Perry began his political career in 1984 when he was elected to represent District 64 in the Texas House of Representatives. He won praise for his legislative work in 1989 when he was named “one of the IO most effective lawmakers” by the Dallas Morning News. He served three terms before being elected to his current post. A native of Paint Creek in Haskell County, Perry received a bachelor of science degree in animal science from Texas A&M University. Upon graduating in 1972, he entered the U.S. Air Force and served as a C-130 pilot. He attained the rank of captain before leaving the service to return to ranching and farming in Haskell County. Admission to this old-fashioned, down-home barbecue with Texas Agriculture Commissioner Rick Perry is $12.50 per person. Call 625-4691 or 625-6119 to purchase tickets. Bus. (210) 620-4544 Paula'd.
