New Braunfels Herald Zeitung (Newspaper) - July 14, 1995, New Braunfels, Texas HerakJ-Zeitung □ Friday, July 14,1995 0 9 ,J__WheelsMC YukonMC version of the wildly popular Suburban adds some twists of its own n ■r lavid Mullens An American phenomenon has long been the tremendous popularity of the Suburban, a huge, truck-based vehicle marketed in virtually identical versions by both Chevrolet and GMC. In an era of small cars, dealers literally cannot keep Suburbans on the lot. Though it came from down-and-dirty work huck origins, today’s Suburban, /ith its plush interiors, sophisticated sound Systems and an options list that lets a buyer equip his - or her - new Suburban as well or ter than any luxury car, is as likely - more likely - to find itself ferrying someone to the (theater or the yacht club or the grocery store as it Is to the job site. !But another American phenomenon is that [even tremendous success is not enough. As proof positive of that, General Motors has set about making the Suburban concept eyen more appealing to even more people. ; It did that by creating the 5-door (that’s four for people on the sides and one for cargo at the rear) GMC Yukon and Chevrolet Tahoe. And those new marques have already proven beyond any shadow of a doubt that success -even success as great as that of the Suburbans -1 can, indeed, be improved upon. If you read this and decide you simply must have a Yukon ar a Tahoe, you don’t just get up and go buy ane. You get up and go put your name on a list. And it’s likely to be a pretty long list. And unless your daughter married the son the deal-jr thought would never leave home, don’t ixpect to do much bargaining, either. Though it is based on the Suburban, the Yukon is not just a shortened version of the 18-bot long king of all sport-utility vehicles. lather, it has its own computer-designed ladder-ype frame. The Yukon has a 117.5-inch wheelbase -14 inches shorter than that of the Suburban -id the body structure from B-pillar back is all ew. Overall length of the Yukon is 199.1 inches flgl I 1995 Yukon four-door and it is 76.4 inches wide. Front coil springs are progressive for optimum ride and handling and two-stage semi-elliptic leaf rear springs have a progressive engagement of their second stage to minimize harshness while still providing load-carrying capacity to match the vehicle’s size. Special micro-cellular urethane jounce bumpers also contribute to gradual engagement. The front suspension’s torsion bar crossmember is robber isolated when the Yukon is equipped with four-wheel drive, as was our test vehicle. And Bilstein gas-pressurized shock absorbers are used on all Yukons for consistent, fade-free damping. The new Yukon is powered by GM’s proven 350 cubic inch V8, today more likely to be described as GM’s 5.7-liter V8, but still deep down the hardy 350 with which my generation grew up. Today that engine is fuel injected and, in its Yukon rendition, generates 200 horsepower at 4,000 rpm and 310 foot-pounds of torque at 2,400, giving it more grunt than most, perhaps all of its competitors. The Yukon’s fuel tank holds 30 gallons. Power is transferred to the Yukon’s rear wheels through an electronically controlled four-speed automatic transmission and, as noted above, the buyer of a Yukon can opt for either two- or four-wheel drive. I    i    .    . Properly equipped, the Yukon is capable of towing trailers weighing up to 7,000 pounds. Brakes are discs at the front and drums at the rear. Two-wheel drive Yukons ride on 15-inch wheels and those with all four feet under them get 16-inchers. Interior roominess also is a Yukon strength. With a six-inch exterior width advantage over Ford’s Explorer or Jeep’s Grand Cherokee, the Yukon provides significantly more hip, shoulder and elbow room inside. And it has a similar edge in cargo capacity, providing 122.5 cubic feet versus 81.6 in the Explorer or 79.3 in the Grand Cherokee. 60-40 bench seats are standard in the Yukon and, so equipped, the vehicle can comfortably transport six adults. But... Our test vehicle was equipped with bucket seats that looked extremely comfortable but weren’t. We found ourselves sitting “on” them rather than in them and, on a quick trip to Waco and back, that left me wishing I’d put the miles on my own car. GM’s interior design folks have some work to do here. Controls on the instrument panel are large dials and instrumentation includes analog tachometer and speedometer, as well as fuel level, voltmeter, oil pressure and engine temperature gauges. A trip odometer is standard and an LED electronic shift indicator is used. The Yukon’s option list is not long because most of the goodies are already a part of the package. Standard convenience features include an electrochromic rear view mirror with digital electronic compass display built in, deep tinted glass, dual cup holders in the dash, power windows and door locks, power mirrors, tilt steering wheel, cruise control, leather-wrapped steering wheel, an electronically tuned stereo AM-FM radio with cassette tape deck and eight speakers, rear heating ducts (more on that in a minute), Scotch Guard fabric protection, and a dash-mounted power receptacle for folks who want to plug in their cellular phone and their radar detector at the same time. Storage compartments located behind the rear wheels have protective covers and there’s a security shade so Yukon owners can hide their goodies in the cargo area. On the outside, aluminum til toy wheels are standard, as is a roof-mounted luggage rack and body side protective molding. If you just have to have some optional stuff, you pan opt for a CD player, remote keyless entry and even running boards. A basic, two-wheel drive Yukon starts at about $27,000. A fully outfitted, four-wheel drive version like the test vehicle will set you back about $32,000.
