New Braunfels Herald-Zeitung (Newspaper) - July 9, 1995, New Braunfels, Texas Sows Newcome facts miss the mark Dear Editor I enjoyed reading the recent writeup about the tennis ranch in the Sunday July 2 However the Newcome Newcombe tennis facts box to the side of the feature story was not all The history paragraph described the ranch as built in the 1940s by partners John Newcombe Clarence Mabry and Graeme When we moved here in 1963 the ranch was owned by a Mr Lew Stewart and was called the Mission Valley Guest Ranch as I remember it I believe a few years lat er it was sold to Clarence Mabry and probably other partners and it became a tennis ranch as well as a guest ranch Later John Newcombe and Graeme Mozeley entered the picture If you stop to think about it these two were probably in nappies in the 1940s Mr Mabry can give you any addi tional information needed about the ranch ownership Sincerely Patricia C Hutchinson New Braunfels Anonymous letter unfair aggravating Dear Editor A friend found the following note on her doorstep today To whom it may concern Please keep your yard nice and clean to help our Thanks the Neighborhood Since my friend has been deprived of the privilege to respond to the sender in person may I do so here In addition to the spelling and punctuation errors what struck me about this note was the cowardice in sending it Any credibility to the message is lost because it is unsigned As a resident of the I resent being included as a supporter of the opin ion expressed I realize that the sender of the note may have some honorable intentions but since did not acknowledge the note with a signature 1 am at a loss to know what these intentions are I cannot ask this person if is aware of my friends financial and personal circumstances or if any assis tance has been offered her Anonymous notes are cowardly and cruel As a ministers wife I have been the recipient of such a note in which the sender apparently took issue with the fact that I had been chewing gum and compared me to the proverbial cudchewing cow Dismissing the ridiculous nature of the note was easy but the fact that it was anonymous added an almost sinister feeling to the situation So you see authors of anony mous notes almost never achieve their goals because of the anonymity Those who are unwilling to acknowledge themselves should keep their opinions to themselves Laura Schulte New Braunfels Rivers get trashed over holidays Dear Editor The party is over and the pollution is so thick that calling it debris would mockpolite terminology The morning newspaper front page depicts happy faces of rafters on the Guadalupe Riv er The camera obviously pointing away from the floating rubbish One of these days as put in the modern ver nacular someone has to get real and make points of reference to the fact that the river is trashed and stagnant in many places The smells are there to go with the contamination After the hol iday this year my son and I picked up a little more than 400 pounds of alu minum cans in a very small segment of the river That pickup was not even close to making a clean river The feel ing of overwhelming odds made the task seem endless and impossible There were so many cans we could easily have become apathetic to this crisis and let this beautiful river pile up There are cans on the banks and in the tall grass along the river that have been there for some time and there are cans that will probably still be there when Gabriel blows his horn To go with the cans that seem more abundant on the Guadalupe River than in the Alcoa plant in Tennessee there are plastic bottles plastic bags ciga rettes shoes and shirts Styrofoam coolers I now have two new ones pulled from the a rubber tube a plastic float lots of makeup and sun screen bottles and water balloons This year there seemed to be some pleasure in throwing shirts and bags into the overhanging limbs of trees They will dangle for some time Some of the rafters told us that they hoped something would be done to make the river clean One man had driven his family 2200 miles from Cal ifornia to share his recollection of the river in other days He was both sad and disgusted Another man com plained that his raft had survived the falls but had succumbed to a bullys overturning One group told us while we were cleaning the river that just a little way upstream one of my neigh bors was throwing cans from his prop erty back into the river That is a bad situation but I can easily see why the neighbor would rid his property of this unwanted trash Sometimes hopeless ness takes its toll A good suggestion that will work is to have active cleanup during the long days of heavy use while paying guests are disposing of their worldly trash in gentle waters Many rafters also suggested that cans and bottles not be allowed on the river Glass bot tles Give me a break the glass bottles are so numerous they almost rival their numbers with the cans Dogs should not be taken on the river That is a suggestion made over and over by hundreds of rafters and by the home owners The dogs dont really like it either Just for the personal note I also tell that after spending some time in the river collecting the 400 pounds of cans and more than twice that amount in tourist trash I parked my fourperson raft on land by the riverside deck after 7 Saturday evening On Sunday morning the raft and a paddle was missing Maybe it collected some trash Fonda Wetsel New Braunfels Young ball player thankful for support of businesses Dear Editor My name is Ashley Bird and I am 11
