New Braunfels Herald-Zeitung (Newspaper) - July 9, 1995, New Braunfels, Texas HeralriZettunnD 199S O SA Injured walker gets helping hand from restaurant owner and manager Dear Editor Just a few words to thank good neighbors and real friends when in t Last Friday I was returning from my usual brisk morning walk had just crossed the San Antonio Street bridge over the Comal River and was proba bly not paying very good attention I suddenly stumbled and just as quick ly smashed down on my knees hands and face on the extremely rough black top filled with sharp stones I just couldnt believe what had hap pened and was trying to assess the damage when suddenly Gregg Weston and Casey Bohman the owner and manager of Tree Tops Riverside Grill respectively were at my side offering assistance They helped me to get up and into the restaurant washroom to clean up some as I was bleeding in several places Mr Bohman insisted on driving me home or to the doctor or hospital or wherever I My wife Lynn was rather shocked by my appearance and took me to our family doctor Mr Bohman even came back Friday afternoon to check and see how we were doing This is just another example of how really great it is living in New Braun fels where the owner and manager of a popular restaurant such as Tree Tops would come to the aid of one in need i We thank you from the bottom of our hearts Gregg and Casey Gene and Lynn Burr New Braunfels Community support for Hummelfest appreciated Dear Editor On behalf of the Hummel Museum and the board of directors 1 would like to take this opportunity to thank the jcommunity for their support of Hum melfest 95 This is the museums fundraising event and without ithe support of the community this I would not be possible I A special thanks to the many vol unteers who devoted long hours to the of this event Without them inone of this would have been possible Sincerely S D David president The Hummel Museum Parenting classes a success because of help 1 Dear Editor J We want to express our apprecia tion to the New Braunfels Herald and the many community agencies who have given support to promoting participation in our recent parenting particular the STEP parenting classes for children ages 612 and the Strengthening Step family classessponsored by Family Outreach of Comal County Inc More than 20 area families have benefited from these programs aimed at improving the quality of family life and communications between parents and their children Most parents have reported moderate success in using the strategies and techniques taught in these classes As families are strength ened so too the community becomes stronger We want to thank the Comal Coun ty Womens Shelter and the New Braunfels Presbyterian Church for pro viding meeting space A special thank you to Georgia Davis Sherry and David McDonald who served as facil itators for the classes One of our goals is to continue offer ing parenting classes as a free service to members of the community Sincerely Barbara Effenberger Parenting Coordinator Family Outreach Young Lanster mired in conjugation quagmire Dear Herald 1 might nigh spent a lifetime trying to learn my son Lanster not to answer questions that would open up a can o worms Like the time at the end of school his English teacher asked the kids in her homeroom how many were going to the school picnic Lanster was the first to raise his hand and said I aint agoin The teacher never lost a minute to set him just listen to she said Ive told you over and over how the verb BE is conjugated It goes like this I am not going he is not going she is not going it is not going we are not going they are not going Now do you understand Lanster said Yesm Aint none of us agoin Another time my husband Henry went to the school to see for hisself why Lanster wuz branging home Fs on his report card They had been a studyen Shakeaspeer and the teacher wuz givin a oral exam She asked the class Who wrote the play called As You Like It Lanster raised his hand and said I Well Henry seen right away how mad that teacher wuz so he taken up for Lanster and told her off He said If my boy said he didnt write it he didnt Theres one thing you can depend on hes no liar You can put that in yore pipe and smoke it That wuz the last time Henry wuz allowed in one of Lansters classrooms I wuz glad to leam that Miz Nancy Bingham got up that bunch of HOSTS like they have now in that Carl Schurz School to hep out with the teaching If theyda had them hosts in Hoggwaller I think Lanster woulda got outa school a lot quicker I told Miz Bingham if she ever got up a hostess bunch I might put in fer one because Im all fer heppin out in the community whur I live If you hear anything about that would you put it in yore paper cause I know you can use all the news you can git hold of besides them wrecks As ever yore friend Corny Greenhorn aka Daisy Phair Tax abatement raises more questions than it answers Dear Editor Your June 7 edition indicated a million budget hike by NBISD would keep the tax rate about the same Your June 27 edition indicates an increase in the tax rate The June 4 edition indi cates NBISD was involved in wanting tax abatement to a company from Cal ifornia a very high property tax rate Moving to New Braunfels would substantially reduce their tax bill with out any further incentives Why not make a news item about what they paid in tngleside compared to New Braunfels taxes Then in the same news show what they will payunder the abatement plan It appears we have been deluded again We should also know what safe guards have been established to assure the 350 jobs How many employees are at the WalMart distribution center today Incidentally why were negotiations held in secret for 18 months by the Chamber of Commerce Another news item would be Meeks buildup of his million economic impact figure Thank you Wagner New Braunfels Emergency care on river exemplary Dear Sirs I am writing this letter of apprecia tion for actions taken during my recent trip to the New Braunfels area Along with my 18yearold daughter and my girlfriend I rode down the Guadalupe River As we made our way down the river we saw much par tying and drinking going on Unlike the majority of the people on the river fortunately we chose to remain sober As we neared the end of our tube ride we came across the last chute before our exit from the river and my daugh ter was thrown from her tube and became injured After rejoining her on the bank I was able to determine that she was in a great deal of pain 1 managed to get her to the next place on the river with a telephone and called for help Four EMS personnel arrived and stabilized her called an ambulance and helped get her transported to McKenna Memorial Hospital The personnel on the scene were very courteous pro fessional and helpful in obtaining expedient and quality care for my daughter These EMS personnel should be commended for their actions and dedication to the service Only knowing one of their names Linda Hughes unit 306A I would like to relate that she and her partners helped beyond that of EMS persons During the aboverelated incident we lost one of our tubes Ms Hughes and her partner transported me back to Jerrys Rentals where our excursion had begun These two people went beyond the scope of their duties in helping me My sincere thanks to the entire New Braunfels EMS organization If there is ever anything I or my organization can do for you or your staff please call on us Sincerely Walter Whitt president Harris County Deputy Sheriffs Association Mayor praises fireworks show HEB Dear Editor WOW Wasnt the Fourth of July fireworks in Landa Park a spectacu lar show Several thousand people were
