1990 and 1991 They also own the leagues worst atten dance record with attendance falling steadily until it dipped below for the season last year Over the last 10 years there hasnt been an issue on winning and losing Its been mostly said Captains president Taylor Moore I think people take it for granted now People expect Winning may be the cure for attendance woes in the major leagues but in the minors its apparently not a factor The Captains drew just more fans during their backtoback championship years of 199091 In 1988 and 89 despite losing in the divisional playoffs Shreveport drew more than But the Captains total paid attendance has dipped in each of the last three seasons from in 1992 to last year They are on pace to draw this year their smallest total since moving to the Fair Grounds Field in 1986 The problem in Shreveport is obviously not the wonlost record Several factors have combined to make the Captains the leastwatched team in the Texas league this season including the fran chises uncertain future On Nov 1 1994 Moore put his team up for sale On Dec 9 an Austin Texas group reached an agreement with Moore to pur chase the Captains Then on May 1 the group backed out of the deal I think that has certainly had an effect on our paid Moore said I think were down that far because we were off season ticket sales a good number That was primarily due to the uncertainty NB Senior League title bid tonight From staff reports Herald Zeitung photo by MICHAEL DARNALL Austin Herring of the New Braunfels Jr League AllStars Blue Team scoops up a bouncer during fielding drills Wednesday at Unicorn Field Herring who played for the Phillies during the regular season will bolster the allstars In the District 31 tournament starting on July 3 The Orioles and the Cardinals have a score to settle and the outcome will decide the New Braunfels Sr League league championship The teams square off tonight at 6 at Canyon High School baseball field The Orioles are 71 and the the Car dinals are 62 The Twins also are con tenders at 62 A win by the Cardinals would set up a threeway tie An Orioles victory would give them the title out right In the event of a tie in the final stand ings there would not be a playoff game Orioles Coach Dennis Wehe said pitcher Eric Holvenson undefeated in three games this season will start at the the mound The coach expects a lowscoring game Both teams have solid pitching and Wehe said The key will be how closely the umpire calls the strike zone If he calls a small strike zone it could account for slower pitches and more hits I think itll be a good game regardless if its high or low The Orioles main offensive weapons are Steven Simpson Eric Holvenson Chad Wehe and Josh Salge all of whom are hitting over 300 The Cardinals feature Mike Chapa Justin Miller and Chris Rogers as their top hitters On defense they also bring one of the premier shortstops in Eric Poeck If everyone is playing well we can beat said
