Kolacek a New Braunfels High School graduate and daughter of local residents Johnny and Gloria Kolacek married her baseball sweetheart on the Durham Bulls Athletic Park field Former New Braunfels High School Junior Miss weds Bulls pitcher on the mound By THOMAS GODLEY Sports Editor They say diamonds are forever If they are talking about the baseball variety then this cou ple chose the perfect place to tie the knot Taking a page from the movie Bull Keeley Kolacek a 1992 New Braun fels Junior Miss and Micah Bowie a minor league pitcher bypassed the chapel for the ball park and exchanged marriage vows on the mound before thousands of fans at Athletic Park field two weeks ago in North Carolina The bride who admits she never really liked baseball until she met her new husband is still wallowing in the limelight of the ceremony It was Keeley said from her temporary home in Durham Weve had so many nice comments about the wedding It has been making big news In fact Micah won his first game this week and people were still talk ing about the wedding We dont mind though We are really enjoying it The team is starting to win their games and things are going great It was the firstever wedding on the new baseball field though not the first in the sport For the newlyweds it was the ultimate fulfill ment of a promise made after their first year of courtship The two began dating after Bowie and his par ents struck up a friendly conversation with Kolaceks parents while visiting Schlitterbahn Water Park in 1993 Addresses were exchanged and before long Micah and Keeley a broadcast journalism junior at the University of Texas agreed to meet for a movie in Austin We went to see Bull Durham on our first date which was a blind date about a year and a half Keeley said The proposal came last Nov 6 on their one year anniversary Micah popped the question as they strolled atop Mount Bonnel overlooking the Austin skyline After that Micah used to tell me if he ever got moved up to Durham wed gel married on the mound just like in the she said Sure enough on May 2 the 20yearold left hander from Humble Texas was promoted from the Atlanta Braves Class A team in Macon to their Advanced Class A squad in Durham He stayed true to his pledge and the wedding arrangements were handled by the Bulls front office Keeleys parents Johnny and Gloria who at first were surprised by the wedding site soon wanned up to the idea upon seeing how much it meant to their daughter and future soninlaw It was amazing when we got to the ball park and saw how beautiful it was and how many people were in the said Gloria Kolacek a longlime resident of New Braunfels I didnt expect it to be such a grand perfor mance It was an incredible The wedding performed by Rev William Harris featured four parachutists who landed on the field during the ring exchange Bowies teammates then raised a canopy of bats that led to a chauffeur and limousine near third base where the couple was escorted away They didnt go far Following their vows the newlyweds stuck around for the second game of a doubleheader between the Bulls and the Fred erick Keys A reception was held in the team owners skybox with free cake for everyone The honeymoon will be delayed a bit longer Keeley said they will return to New Braunfels after the season and then look for a place in Austin Marriage to a baseball player means plenty of moving and time apart from each other Keeley is more than willing to make a few sacrifices All I was thinking during the ceremony was how much I loved she said I really was nt thinking about being on a baseball field with thousands of people looking The Dream comes away with recurring MVP flash By MICHAEL GRACZYK Associated Press Writer HOUSTON AP He spins He fakes He slams He hits the fallaway
