Heres what youd like tn see during Game 1 of the NBA Finals tonight Shaquille ONeal playing Hakeem Olajuwon straight up one on one with no rnessy double teams Its not going to happen say Houston coach Rudy Tomjanovich and Orlando coach Brian Hill Neither is willing to risk let ting his superstar cover the other teams superstar without some help That would be interesting wouldnt it Tomjanovich said Thered be a lot of mad 3point shooters Hill said tie might agree to a doubleteam moratorium but not for long The first time Hakeern got the he said Id have to raise rny hand and say I Hill look a lesson from how Olajuwon burned San Antonios David Robinson when the league MVP tried to cover last years MVP one on one Olajuwon aver aged points and rebounds in the Western Conference finals I marveled at the way he Hill said In two of those games I just got up from my sofa and even mentioned to my team here in practice that Ive never seen a guy play Another reason not to let these two guard each other unaided is they like each other so well ONeal has so much admiration for Olajuwon he once sneaked in the back door of the HernisFair Arena in San Antonio to get his autograph Landa Golf tees up new course of action Computer system to help track sales and traffic at local course By THOMAS GODLEY Sports Editor Landa Park Golf Course is known as one of the best golfing bargains in the area For an annual fee of some of the more avid members have been known to come away pay ing about a day for 18holesof play But while local players smile at the deal city officials raised their eye brows when the munic ipal golf course showed a projected loss in 199495 Officials pointed to the closure of two greens fewer winter Texans and bad weather as pos sible reasons for the financial setback City Manager Mike Shands was among the first to say the the golf course should be expected to show a profit or at least break even Questions arose as to where the problem stemmed and the answer was difficult to narrow With a new computer system that will keep close track of inventory and traffic the city is looking to get a clearer picture of operations at the course This is not necessarily set up to fix a problem but to allow for a greater degree of account Shands said It is a way to get a better indicator of expenditures and revenues for example on merchandise sales green fees cart fees and the number of rounds of golf being played It will give us a way to track inventory and satisfy our auditors and the public Ultimately the data may be used to determine the direction of operations at the course in the Landa Golf check list FEES Annual membership fee is for individuals and for family Annual cart fee is Daily green fee is on weekdays and on weekends Cart fee is for noouisat the mound Witek held the Rockies batters to three run the rest of the way to bolster the rally and earn the win TheRockies who finished the regular season at 94 had reached the championship by beating the Padres 63 The Red Sox who were 112 for the season edged the Blue Jays 54 to advance We told the kids they were going to be champions whether they win or Coach Witek said Fortunately it turned out to be a win It was a very entertaining ball game the whole In the sixth inning with the Rockies lead ing 68 Chad Tuch got an inlhepark hit that cleared the bases to give the Red Sox the lead 98 Rockies pitcher Bradley Bevil who went six innings before getting mandatory relief from pitcher Joel Soap tied the game in the sixth by reaching first and stealing three bases to cross home is expected to be work ing in the first week of July Newlyhired golf pro and manager Chris Acker said the computer will be the biggest change for local golfers The current system of signingin by hand will be replaced by mem bership cards with personal identification num bers logged into the computer Landa Golf currently has about 230 members who pay an annual fee including an estimated 150 individual 40 family and 17 junior mem berships Tec times will remain arranged on a first come firstserve basis Acker said turnout for playing times has been steady and the morning signup system has been able to accommodate Landa Golf Course gets about rounds of golf played per year Thats a lot of traffic for a town the size of New Braunfels Chris Acker that He added that golfers must show up in person to reserve tee times and callin reserva tions are not accepted The computer system will come in handy this summer when the course hits its busiest time of the season Landa Golf Course gets about rounds of golf played per year Thats a lot of traffic for a town the size of New Acker said Its not too bad right now but it will get crowded during the peak he said Thats something we deal Local linksters still consider in Landa Golf a clean wellmaintained course Much of that credit is given to the staff and groundskeeper Fernando Gutierrez whose crews spend long hours keeping the course in top playing shape Stark Ambrose 81 is one of those golfers who keeps coming back because the course is one of the best in the Ive been coming out her since 1978 and theyve made worlds of said Ambrose a Landa Golf member who plays about twice a week Its a fine With the new computer system Acker fore sees additional improvements and efficiency Its an entirely new system that will have us starting from said Acker an assis tant pro at the course for 14 Its a chal lenge and Im looking forward to HeraldZeitung photos by MICHAEL DARNALL Above Stark Ambrose is one of many longtime Fishermen who dont have access to a boat are often frus trated with their options for fish ing There are lots of places where you can fish from the shore The problem is that the fishing isnt good most of the lime When it is good its too crowded to rcaly enjoy yourself If you fall into this category then youll probably be interested in Keith Warren great fishing opportunities on our Texas beaches Spring and fall are probably the best times to beach fish The surf is relatively flat water is in good shape and best of all there are lots of fish to be caught Heavy weight thick bodied trout and redfish travel the ever changing guts and ditches paralleling the beach in search of bait fish A fish call whiting is the most common catch This small 1015 inch fish is great tasting and there are no bag limits Plus dead whiting will work to catch anything from redfish to shark My suggestion for those who would like to take a surf fishing adventure along the Texas coast is to head south of Corpus Christi This area is remote requiring four wheeldrive vehicles Take everything you need because there is nothing on the beach for over 60 miles but sand a few fishermen and lots of fish This part of the coast is called the Padre Island National Seashore Make sure and tell someone when to expect you off the beach and back to safe area This part of the beach is tough If vehicles break down or get stuck you may be there for a while until help arrives There is one guide that special izes in surf fishing He provides everything from the vehicle to all tackle and equipment His specialty is making sure clients catch fish Contact Bill San difer at 5129378446 for informa tion on Padre Island National Seashore Keith Warren is the host of The Texas Angler television show which broadcasts statewide
