their own personal copy of the 1995 Rising Star maga zine Amber Nicole Somers daughter of Dana Somers and Tom Qarrett of New Braunfels has been selected as a Krlselda Gonzales San Antonio Area County Queen of 1995 Kriselda Gonzales was crowned on March 20 1995 at the Lila Cockrell Theatre Out of approx imately young ladies from the immediate San Antonio area Kriselda raised the most money making her eligible to be crowned County Queen She is grateful for the support of her entire family and the community who purchased her tickets and her tacos Prior to being crowned Kriselda had won 2nd place in beauty judging which earned her a 2nd place beauty cup Her 1st place honor of being Miss County Queen earned her a trophy with special recognition by Pizza and a savings bond to further her education Kriselda says her dream is to be a traveling gym nast and a model one day She wants to personally thank the entire public who made it possible for her and all the special unique people that she met and made friends with in the midst of working for a goal Mr and Mrs John Gonzales said they cant say enough about the community because when they started to raise the money the odds were against them because they were competing with the San Anto nio area and there was a very slim chance Thank you New Braunfels for putting the odds in Kriseldas favor Local residents Chris Gold and Whitney Daum both of New Braun fels have been elected to the Student Government Association at Texas Lutheran College in Seguin Daum a sophomore at TLC was elected sena tor and Gold a junior business admin istration major was elected comptrol ler for the 199596 academic year The Student Government Associa tion consists of three officers and 16 each from the fresh man sophomore junior and senior April 29 for the third annual Rising Star Young Writers Conference This program which encourages creative writing in elementary schools has grown by leaps and bounds says Ms Elzinga a schoolteacher who ini tiated the project in Waco in 1992 The first year for the statewide effort we received 392 entries from students for the showcase magazine Rising Each represented the best from the students grade in ele mentary school Last year more than 700 entries came in For 1995 the total rose to more than entries and the 1995 Rising Star will publish 162 of Fifthgrader Nick Guerrero of Navarro Elementary had his work of art Bird in published in the state magazine Guerrero attended the conference with his class and school teacher Susette Ochoa All the children and teachers attend ed workshops led by Texas authors of childrens books met their favorite authors at an autograph party and enjoyed a reception while visiting the displays of 287 exhibitors When they left for home they took with them a goody bag of souvenir products donated by Austin businesses and Amber Somers finalist in the 1995 PreTeen Texas Scholarship and Recognition Program to be held May 2729 at the Adams Mark Hotel in Houston PreTeen Texas is a byinvitation onlyscholar ship and recognition event involving young ladies 7 to 12 years of age rank ing in the top 10 of the state acade mically Additionally young ladies are invited who have been recognized publicly for their outstanding person al achievements leadership abilities or creative talents State Finalists will be judged on 1 Academic achievement 2 Volunteer Hill Country Counseling Center is pleased to annouhce the formation of an Adolescent Therapy Group The group is designed to assist adolescents learn healthy more productive ways to deal with personal family peer problems This weekly group will be facilitated by a licensed clinician and give participants a safe environment to discuss and work through their problems The
