this time its appropriate for me and my family to thank the following participants to have this made possible for us The Department of Veterans Affairs for their financial grant and financial assistance to make this dream come true Without them this could not have been possible Fulmer and Mr Occio from the Department of Veterans Affairs deserve special thanks for helping us with the tremendous amount of paper work that was required in order for me to qualify for my disability benefits Century 21s staff and especially Sue Norris and Mrs Laurie Hawkins for their assistance and finding me the property that was required from the VA Once again thank you Sue and Laurie Also Rayco Ltd and its staff for the construction of this wonderful home Special thanks to Mrs Becky Martinez right Signs will be posted on Common and Loop 337 all the way to the house So please come and enjoy my home Refreshments and cookies will be served Sincerely Manuel Camareno Lew Simmonds Is a winner Dear Editor There is a changing of the guard in New Braunfels High School athletics Lew Simmonds is no longer the head football coach Lew Simmonds is a winner It is this readers opinion that this is neither the time nor the place to debate records coaching philoso phies or coaching styles Instead it is time to focus on things of much greater consequence Let us turn our attention to the contributions made to the development of character and substance of our greatest asset our children Contributions made by a man whose moral compass was without fail pointed toward what was best for his students Let us talk about the real measure of the value of Coach Lew Simmonds Long after the season ends the stadium lights dim and the pages of the yearbook turn yellow with age our children will find themselves in a much larger and more important contest the real world At this time and not a moment before will we be able to more fully appreciate the significance of Lew Simmonds contributions Winning is more than coaching and coaching is more than winning Lew Simmonds is a winning coach Lew is also much more Lew has led by example both on and off the field for Lew is cut from a bolt of fabric not eas ily found today Lew Simmonds is a rare commodity with much to offer and I feel very fortunate that he has touched the lives of your children and mine We will reap the benefits of his efforts for years Thanks Lew I Sincerely GilLindsey A few more who wont be playing harps Dear Editor It was with a sense of dumbfounded amazement that I read what to me was an unbelievable letter to the editor Wednesdays HeraldZeitung in which a reader took Allene Blaker to task for an imagined religious affront in her article last Sunday concerning New Braunfels people who wouldnt be going to heaven Personally I thought it was great This young woman has The world would be a far better place with more fresh wit like Ms Blakers and fewer of the humorless types who try to drag everyone else down to their overly serious nitpick ing level Lighten up you guys My only criticism of her story is that she failed to go out of town and include Rush Limbaugh TV evangelists the entire state legislature Phil Gramm and all the rest of the Congress Sincerely John D Luther New Braunfels Kervorkian is no killer Dear Editor I would like to challenge the defini tion of killer in relation to the recent editorial on Dr Jack Kevorkian and also defend Dr Kevorkians clients seek him out and ask how to accomplish a spe cific end to their own pain A true killer is a person who causes death with only selfinterest in mind and has no regard as to the thoughts of the individual being killed America is supposed to be about personal being able to determine their own destiny as long as they dont interfere with the personal rights of others In a lot of reporting the reporters make the victim of the tragic suffering seem like they had arrived at the deci sion of suicide on a whim and given a day or two they would have changed their mind These people are seriously hurting Adults should be given the benefit of the doubt since they have lived and experienced life and know in their minds as to what is tolerable to them and what is not There were unimaginable mountains of anguish in each personal decision Theyre not trying to get their friends to do it The other great tragedy is of course for those who still reside on earth and have to deal with the ugly aspects of dying One group is those that agree with Mr Loveladys position and feel the need to defend the law to the very last letter They seem to make it more a matter of what they find dffensive to themselves personally than having true compassion for the victim I will never understand why people can be so selfrighteous as to believe their own opinions are paramount to the wills and wants of another person when the subject only deals with that other per sons own life an no one elses Then there is the other sad minority who have supported the gutwrenching deci sions of the departed one and now get a double dose of anguish from the ill placed contempt of those who do not agree with their having gone along with the suicide Dr Kevorkians act is not wearing thin to those who believe in true human justice This man helps many do what they cannot accomplish by themselves Someone has to keep fighting Sincerely Jacqueline G Merrill New Braunfels Kervorkian editorial played on emotion not facts Dear Editor Some editors at the HeraldZeitung seem to have difficulty deciding whether they want to be evangelists or newspaper editors In reference to Doug Lovedays edi torial Killer the editor should have his facts straight before writing an opinion The young man that he referred to died at home with his mother at his side with the aid of a bottle of carbon monoxide He did not die in a van with a hose hooked to the exhaust pipe as stated by Mr Loveday Neither the editor nor I have any way of knowing the pain suffering and humiliation experienced by a person dying of a disease such as this Perhaps we should therefore reserve judgment as to this mans right to end his life An opinion becomes less credible when it is based on emotions and not facts Rogers Williams New Braunfels Simmonds is a fine teacher coach Dear Editor Recently the head football coach of New Braunfels resigned He did not produce a winner last year but did fulfill the most important aspects of his job As parents we want a coach who will reinforce the instructions in disci pline integrity honesty loyalty and teamwork that we teach our children at Understanding Alzheimers Disease Bill Davis Neurologist May 7 Senior Citizens Center Landa Street New Braunfels Texas Refreshments Free Literature Provided Free For The Community By honor and dignity One who teaches values that his players will utilize throughout their lives A coach whose lifestyle match es his teachings A man who can gra ciously accept defeat at the hands of a superior opponent as well as savor vic tory knowing that no one person is ever responsible for a teams success Someone who teaches that duty self sacrifice and persona responsibility are essential to real success arid that faith in God is the foundation on which character is built Some say that football is more than a game and they are right It is a micro cosm of life as are all sports A young can learn and apply valuable life skills on the field of com petition This is why we encourage and support scholastic it educates no more less If the main purpose of football is to win championships then we must change me rhetoric of teaching values and get down to the business of winning at all costs We are either building character in young athletes or we are not As a father of young kids who will one day be Unicorns I am much more concerned about values than season records Coach Lew Simmonds was more concerned about the kids than anything else Sincerely Randy Sims New Braunfels The
