GODLEY Sports Editor Coach Lew Simmonds will step away after four years as head football coach and athletic director at New Braunfels High School Citing personal reasons Simmonds submit ted to the school district offices a request Mon day to be reassigned to teaching and coaching boys track at the high school What I am doing today is in the best interest of my Simmonds said in a letter to the district NBISD Superintendent Charles Bradberry said he would approve the request and bring it before the school boards regular meeting tonight He added that the district would begin the search for a new athletic director immedi ately We will be contacting what we feel are the top quality coaches in the state and trying to get interviews set up as soon as Bradberry said Bradberry said all of assistants would remain on the staff The district is looking to fill an assistant position which opened last month when Donald Gann resigned Simmonds who served as track coach and assistant football coach for more than 10 years at NBHS replaced Head Coach James Strccty after the 1990 season In four seasons Sim monds guided the Unicorns football teams to a combined record 6f 2914 making the playoffs in 1991 and 1992 The Unicorns finished 93 101 6 4 93 and 46 94 under Simmonds Bradberry said Simmonds who had a year remain ing on his contract came forward last week with his request to be reas signed The coach cited concerns for his family and personal health as his reasons Coach Lew Simmonds Bradberry said he had asked that the coach take a week to give the matter more thought Strccty the winningcsl coach in Texas 4A in the 1980s and now coaching at Madison High School in San Antonio will be contacted for ref erences to prospects who could fill the position Bradberry said Asked if Strccty would be a can didate Bradberry said 1 hadnt thought about it but that would be something to Bradberry said that Simmonds decision did not conic as a total surprise I cant say that it was a total surprise but you arc never really surprised when someone is in a pressure Bradberry said I cant think of many jobs that have as much pressure on a daytoday basis than a high schoolhead coachingjob in I cant say enough about Lew as a coach and as a person He always tried to do what was right for Unicorn football and athletics Maybe this will be what is right for Lew and for the Unicorns program in thecoming years We know the track program will be in very good Thunder throw HeraldZeitung photos by MICHAEL DARNALL Pitcher Bradley Wilkinson takes aim from the mound Monday night PHOENIX AP Standing in the way of the Phoenix Suns and their fourth trip to the West em Conference finals in seven years is one huge obstacle Hakeem Olajuwon The 7foot center is the primary reason the Houston Rockets are the defending NBA cham pions Theyve won seven of their last eight games when a loss meant elimination from the playoffs Before he began to tire Olajuwon nearly carried Houston to victory Sunday before the Suns went on a 154 run in the the final to pull out a 114110 win And he represents the Rockets best hope of becoming the fifth team to come back from a 31 deficit in a bestof7 series A victory by the Suns in Game 5 tonight in the America West Arena would dethrone the cham pions Even if Houston wins the Rockets would still need two more Despite the odds the respect for Olajuwon is so great that Charles Barkley alone among the Suns was willing to predict an early end No team can beat us three Barkley said We know they wont quit we know its going to be a tough game But if we lose the series it will definitely be our fault Weve got one more game in this series and its going to be a dogfight the next Joe Kleine one of Phoenixs three centers NBA playoffs tonight Chicago Bulls at Orlando Magic G TNT Series is tied at 22 Los Angeles Lakers at San Antonio Spurs payper view blackout for New Braunfels with 35mile radius of San Antonio Spurs lead series 31 Houston vs Phoenix TBS Sun lead series 31 said an Olajuwonled team is always dangerous as the Rockets showed by winning the last two games of the 1994 Finals against New York not to mention the last two of their firstround series with Utah alter the ha took a 21 lead Hes arguably the best center in the game and youve just got to try and do what you can do and hope he misses his Kleine said Spurs roll without Rodman By KELLEY SHANNON Associated Press Writer SAN ANTONIO AP From the Los Angeles Lakers point of view eccentric forward Dennis Rodman may as well be in the San Antonio Spurs lineup Rodman usually doesnt score as much as his replacements do and the Spurs seem to strengthen their competi tive spirit in their drive to win without him Spurs coach Bob Hill benched Rod man in Sundays game for arguing and refusing to join a huddle in a previous game Hill said he would decide just before tipoff tonight whether to use Rod man in Game 5 of their Western Con ference semifinal with the Lakers However Hill strongly hinted that Rodman the leagues leading rebound er would see some playing time Nobody holds grudges on this Hill said I certainly San Antonio leads the bestof7 series 31 and would advance to the confer ence finals with one more After practice Monday greenhaired Rodman retreated to the locker room saying he didnt expect to play today Im getting punished for some stupid reason It didnt him me at all I can play or not play Im not expecting to Rodman said Hill later told reporters IfI were you guys I would always listen very closely to Dennis and then probably whatever he says the opposite is I promise you had I needed him in Game 4 I would have used The Lakers who are trying to become only the fifth NBA team to rebound from a 31 deficit to win a playoff series also were preoccupied Monday with the latest Rodman soap opera Lakers guard Nick Van lixel said tie was surprised by the Spurs response to losing Rodman for Game 4 The Spurs won Sunday 8071 at the Forum I thought they would come out a lit tle flat but they came out and 1 guess they wanted to prove it to Rodman that they could win without him I think this is the wrong time for their team to he doing that but they came out and they did a great job Karate fighters kick way to top at Austin tournament From submitted reports Competing in the Masters National Karate Tournament in Austin members of the
