interview techniques Lions job fair to attract employers Students looking for summer jobs and looking for summer workers can get together Saturday March 11 at the New Braun fels Breakfast Lions 2nd Annual Sum mer Youth Job Fair The Summer Youth Job Fair will be held in Wesley Hall First United Methodist Church 572 W San Anto nio St in New Braunfels from noon The entrance is on Mill Street The Job Fair is free and open to all high school and collegeage students age 15 and above It will include a presentation at providing advice on job application and interview techniques Some of the organizations which have already agreed to participate include New Braunfels Park and Recreation Dept Schlitterbahn Texas Rehabilitation Commission Texas Employment Commission Olsten Staffing Services and WalMart Survey to track habits of downtown shoppers This week shoppers ques tionnaires will be distributed to area residents The survey sponsored by South west Texas State University and the New Braunfels Main Street Program will profile shoppers habits prefer ences and tastes regarding the down town area Survey participants are eligible to win one of the following a dinner for two at Huisache Grill a dinner for two at Plaza Diner a gift basket from Gifts and Glitter a gift certificate from Henne Hardware and a free movie rental pass from Blockbuster Video Texas Briefs In early Oct 1994 the Main Street Program and SWTSUs Small Busi ness Institute formed a partnership to better understand retail shopping in New Braunfels Questions concerning convenience variety of stores and con sumer tastes will benefit the overall marketing approach for downtown By understanding the desires and preferences of consumers the down town area can offer a variety of goods and services necessary unanimously approved leg islation to overhaul the states welfare system acting on one of Gov George W Bushs top priorities The Health and Human Services Committee voted 90 Thursday to send the bill to the full House Rep Harvey Hilderbran a coauthor of the bill said the legislation encour ages welfare recipients to become self sufficient by setting time limits for benefits There are certain Bushs ideas to change the system Senate Committee Approves Bjll To Abolish Helmet Law AP A Senate com mittee has approved legislation that would allow adults to ride motorcy cles without helmets The Senate State Affairs Committee voted 85 Thursday to repeal the 1989 state law requiring motorcyclists to wear head protection It now goes to the full Senate for consideration Sen Jerry Patterson the bills author said there is no proof that wearing hel mets saves lives Im a believer in taking away indi vidual liberties if theres a benefit said Patterson RPasadcna I think frankly that with a helmet could cost lives Senate Approves Trucking Deregulation Bill AUSTIN AP Texas trucking reform is rolling through the Legisla ture Older workers in city recognized this week By IDA SING Special to the HeraldZeitung Keeping busy feeling useful and being with others has proved to be beneficial to people 55 or more years of older workers have proved to be beneficial to the workplace as well One of the programs that helps these good things to happen is the Senior Texans Employment Program Authorized by the Texas State Legis lature and the Governors Committee on Aging in 1973 STEP pays mini mum wage to experienced workers over age 55 for sponsors that are pub lic entities and certain nonprofit agen cies Corral County is fortunate to be allotted 12 openings for enrollees who work 20 hours per week in 7 different sponsoring agencies As Aging Program Coordinator for Community Council of South Central Texas and director of the old Senior Center on Comal Street Lanita Ross has had more experience with STEP enrollees than anyone in the commu nity She says that sometimes STEP people have been her only help and she retired this month with many hap py memories of the days that their assistance made better for her Delores Serda is probably the most experienced enrollee having been Lanitas good right arm for more than 12 years doing everything from driving a van to passing out surplus commodities and shes not through yet She will con tinue with CCSCT assisting Site Man ager Mary Gomez with the Congre gate Meals program Mary too has found STEP enrollees to be Hfesavers Vincente Rodriguez is available to lift the food containers and help with the serving site at Laurel Plaza Apart ments Whatever needs doing Vin cente does The team is hoping for the return of Helen Malin one of their working group who is out on health leave Mary says that Helen knew every person coming for meals and was always friendly and uplifting to deal with She is sorely missed The city of New Braunfels has two The state Senate on Thursday with out objection approved a bill to over haul trucking laws to follow a federal mandate for deregulation and strength en safety enforcement I think a volunteer performing clerical duties and enjoying it all Its a wonderful she said It keeps me busy and helps me pay the Two STEP ladies make one full time receptionist at Family Outreach of Comal County Inc Marie Dever works the first two and a half days and Ida Sing comes in for the second half of the week Never in the office at the same time the two confer by phone or leave notes for each
