Canyon one game closer to district playoff berth By THOMAS GODLEY Sports Editor Staring at a 10 deficit early in the game Canyon Coach Danny Bueno knew the Cougars playoff chances were in jeopardy Kerville Tivy was not the kind of team that gives up points easily Just a few weeks ago they shut out Alamo Heights and took New Braunfels to the fourth quarter before giving up a Bueno said Those arc two good offensive teams so I was leery when they scored first We respect their Ms fears faded as the Cougars took control in the next ten minutes scoring two goals before halftime and ultimately posting a critical 41 win on the road Friday Vince Bueno scored three goals for his thin hat trick and 23rd goal this season The win gives Canyon 64 962 a clear shot at the playoff They stand in third place behind New Braunfels and Alamo Heights 1233 With a win Tuesday night against the Schertz Clemens Buffaloes Canyon can clinch a playoff spot That will be a big game at home for Bueno said If the fans can get out there and cheer us on it will be a good way for us to end our last game at The outlook was not so bright early on when Tivys Jeremy Steinruck followed through on a fake kick and nailed the ball past goalie Rugger Gottsacker The trickery came off a corner kick that was not unfamiliar to the Cougars They pulled that play last time we played them and I should have had the kids ready for Coach Bueno said The point proved to Vince Bueno be a nonfactor when moments Bueno manuevered past defenders and was taken down in the box Canyon was right back in the game with a goal on a penalty kick that locked it at 11 Bueno was not finished Shortly before half time he broke through the defense again and put a shot into the right side of the net and Canyon was on its way Bryan Yuras a defensive specialist showed he could add to the offense passing to Curtis Arens who dribbled through two Tivy defend ers and placed a solid shot in the far right side of the goal Bueno who came out of the game with ten minutes remaining finished the scoring with his third goal for the hat trick Vince had a good game but it was the entire teams unselfish play and ability to get the ball to the open player that gave us the Coach Bueno said This has to be one of the better games weve played this season All the kids stepped it up col HeraldZeitung photo by MICHAEL DARNALL Smithson Valleys Moe
