New Braunfels Herald-Zeitung (Newspaper) - March 5, 1995, New Braunfels, Texas Sunday March HeraldZeitung MSA New Braunfels caring clti zens helped make a miracle Dear Editor I am writing to share a special expe rience which involved hundreds of very special people in New Braunfels On Nov 16 our sweet new baby girl was bom Olivia Grace was healthy and pink and ready to change our lives forever although we didnt know to what extent at the On the day we were preparing to leave McKenna Hospital Olivias health began to dete riorate very quickly and before we knew what was happening her tiny body was attacked by a very aggressive bacteria strep B and her lung col lapsed She was treated here for sever al hours and then was rushed to the neonatal ICU at Santa Rosa This was followed by the setting in of pneumo nia as well as meningitis edema infec tions in her blood encephalitis and the malfunctioning of several of her body systems and organs Needless to say her doctors had very little hope of her surviving as they tried to prepare us for the worst case death and the best case a severely handicapped child Our hearts reluctantly started on an emotional roller coaster ride that lasted several very long days We could only put our trust in the Lord and pray He would perform a miracle After about a week we began to see incredible changes in her condition and the doctors and nurses even dared to utter that m word Her neurologist came in to meet with us after examin ing her and said simply Olivia is nothing short of a miracle Hundreds of people in this town as well as from all over the country and world were praying for Olivia We have received letters cards and gifts from people in New Braunfels that we didnt even Jcnow We were brought fabulous meals for weeks Friends cleaned our house and took care of our two little jboys We were given money for gas i meals and bills The list goes on and oh We felt deeply loved and cared Ifpr j There are so many horrifying things that happen in our country and that seems to be the focus of much of the media Yet people drew together in our town and we are so grateful j We hope you will print this letter to encourage others in trying situations that God is alive and well and people reach out in love and sacrifice can never ever begin to thank everyone enough We appreciate every thing done by our families our church friends and friends of friends We are i so grateful for the gift and finesse of Carlos Campos Dr Mark Statler jtlje fine nurses lab techs and thera pjsts at McKenna as well as the won Iderful nurses and doctors at Santa j Rlosa May the Lord bless each person who offered a prayer for our Olivia who by the way is doing beautifully Sincerely Megg and Anthony Chalupa New Braunfels Banning cans on river is a terrible idea Dear Editor 1 am writing this letter in regard to WORDS proposed container restric flons on the rivers of New Braunfels This has to be a joke Theyre talking about losing more than half the tourist trade in and around the city If they want to stop the litter on the rivers they should put a tencent deposit on cans statewide and have all stores stop selling glass and styrofoam Sincerely C Smith Too hard on Clinton No way Dear Editor This is my response to Elmo L Fis chers letter of Feb 22 Too hard on President Clinton How can anyone be too hard on a president who has done nothing of REAL BEN EFIT to the American people but has tried very hard to create socialism on every hand especially the health care system We have the best health care in the world besides socialized medi cine has been shown to fail everywhere it has been Icam from oth ers mistakes He has made great strides toward taking away our con stitutional rights in many areas from gun ownership to use of private prop erty especially farmers and ranch ers His environmental policies are disastrous for landowners at the same time he is attempting to strangle small business to death with regulations and requirements they cannot support finan cially and stay in business giving peo ple employment He is reducing our national defense preparedness to an extremely dangerous level daring thirdworld countries to attack us as well as Russia which still has nuclear weaponry aimed at us and DOES NOT intend to remove it by their own state ment Many people who voted for him 43 per cent of voters not 43 million have since rejected his policies as evidenced by the sweep of his colleagues from Congress in November This landslide victory for Republicans should tell him something but he refuses to and his own party continues to dis tance itself from him He should bring our troops home and place them along the southern bor ders and coastlines not put them in bread lines seeking employment from industries which he has hamstrung Too hard on him No Way His election was a terrible mistake and every effort must be made to nullify Frances Shannon Spring Branch A note to the person who picked up a wallet Dear Editor This personal whom Im not if they read this col umn theyll know its meant for them You see I dropped my wallet in the WalMart parking lot on Friday Feb 17 and 5 minutes later 1 went back to get it but someone had picked it up I still keep thinking every day that some one will call but they havent I just want whoever got it to know what the in cash was intended for and maybe theyll think twice if they find someone elses wallet That money was for bills that havent been paid in a couple of months and bills that are clouding over our credit report and keeping us from refinancing our home If we are unable to refinance our home and now we are because we dont have any way to get that much money we will lose it I dont think you could have thought at all about how much it would devas tate the person who lost the money or surely you would have returned it My husband and I try so hard to make a good life for ourselves and our 19 monthold daughter and treat other people the way you would want to be treated When something like this hap pens you really lose all trust and faith in everybody Please dont do this to anyone else even if the wallet only has or 10 in never know what that money may mean to someone else Paula Duffy Canyon Lake HeraldZeitung staff is doing great Dear Editor Congratulations on the good work the staff at the HeraldZeitung has done this week What a delight to have two consecutive days with front page pic tures that were not car crashes Both Twice as Nice on March 1 and Three of a Kind of March 2 were very refreshing Lets hope Michael Damall will continue with these types of front page photos 1 dont know of anyone who enjoys day after day of tragic car crash photos Thank you to Craig Hammctt for such a wellwritten article about the Region 8 HIV Education and Preven tion Coalition visiting Hospice New Braunfels This front page story on March 1 was very informative and thoughtprovoking Kudos to Roger Croteau and the oth er staff for the God Should Not Be Used to Divide Us article on the opin ion page of the March 2 paper How nice of them to remind us of the impor tance of respect for one another Thanks to all of you for your inspi rational work Keep it up Cheerfully Christina Smith How about a tax break for the retired elderly Dear Editor I have not heard much discussion by the President or the legislators regarding tax breaks for fully retired or aged disabled persons The govern ment has permitted working persons to buy IRAs 301K plans but noth ing has been proposed for the elderly retired citizens Why not allow retired and disabled elderly citizens over 65 years of age to invest taxfree annually before April 15 of each to 1994 When they decide to cash in these investments or a portion thereof Part FlorlUa Outside they darken Lenses injrmuk of Traniilioiu Optical Heres a new plastic prescription eyeglass lens that automatically darkens outdoors and lightens Walnut 2106259770 taxes will be due on the interest Some of those folks may leave such funds in for the next generation or future gen erations to cash These funds would boost the economy tremen dously True at the moment the gov ernment would be giving some of the elderly a tax break temporarily but they are now giving younger genera tions huge tax breaks especially those with children And the huge elderly population is still paying school taxes to educate THEIR CHILDREN So Congress and the President arc DIS CRIMINATING against the older cit izens When such a program goes into effect the constituents will be pleased and the economy will get a boost This would encourage many other persons who have been considering retirement to go ahead and retire thus opening up many jobs for the younger generations It is time we encourage investing instead of welfare in this nation If you agree with this please write the President your Congressmen and your Senators today Katharine C Blackford
