The 29th Annual Texas Legislative Conference, sponsored by the Greater New Braunfels Chamber of Commerce, will feature some of die most influential leaders in die state, according to Allan Shivers Jr., Chair of die Conference Advisory Committee. The Conference is scheduled for Thursday and Friday, March 23 and 24 in the New Braunfels Civic Center. Governor George W. Bush, Lieutenant Governor Bob Bullock, U.S. Senator Ray Bailey Hutchison and 6 influential committee chairs from the Texas Legislature are program participants at this year’s Conference. Cosponsors for this year are Bank of America Texas, Guadalupe Valley Telephone Co-op, Inc., PacifiCare in the Southwest and Southwestern Bell Telephone. On Thursday evening, March 23, Lieutenant Governor Bob Bullock will be presented the Texan of the Year Award by former Lieutenant Governor William P. Hobby. On Friday morning, March 24, the Conference will be dedicated to John A. Traeger, former State Senator and a former recipient of the Texan of the Year Award. State Representative Edmund Kuempel and Arrangements Committee Chair Bennie Bock ll will give dedicatory remarks honoring Traeger for his service to the state in the field of Public Affairs and his participation in the Legislative Conference from its beginning. The keynote address on Friday morning will be given by Governor Bush, and senator Hutchison will be the principal speaker at the noon luncheon. Following Bush’s address, a legislative panel will address “Hot Potatoes’’ in the Legislative Issues session. Speakers on the panel are State Senators Kenneth Armbrister, Gonzalo Barrientos, and David Sibley. State Representatives serving on the panel include Toby Goodman, Paul Sadler and Mark Stiles. Armbrister is Chair of the Senate State Affairs Committee, Barrientos chairs the Legislative and Congressional Redistricting, while Sibley chairs the Economic Development Committee. On the House side, Goodman chairs the Juvenile Justice and Family Issues Committee, Sadler chairs Public Education, and Stiles is Chair of the powerful Calendars Committee. Moderating the panel will be Harvey Kron-berg, editor of The Quorum Report, a popular political publication. According to Bock, registration for this year's conference is running well ahead of recent years and attendance is expected to be coe of the highest since Firs Lady Bahera Bush was present to receive the Texan of the Year Award Other recipients of the Texan of the Year Award include Leon Jaworsto, Lady Bird Johnson, and former Gov ernors Dolph Briscoe and John Coronally. Former Ambassador Anne Armstrong, Senator Lloyd Bentsen, U.S. Secretary of Stare James A. Baker HI, Senator Phil Gramm, Ambassador Robert S. Strauss, Barbara Jordan, and Herb Kelleher are also past recipients of the award. Then Vice President George Bush received the Texan of the Year Award at the 1983 Conference, when attendance readied record levels, according to Bock.
