playoffs on line as rivals squareoff tonight at New Braunfels gym By THOMAS GODLEY Sports Editor High school basketball fans couldnt ask for more than what rides on tonights game at Unicorn Gym Take away one teams shot at making history Take away the chase for the dis trict title Take away the chance to clear up the playoff picture Take away the duel between two districtleading guards Take away all that and you still have two teams that yearafteryear go all out purely for the sake of beating a cross town rival The CanyonNew Braunfels showdown doesnt really need the intangibles but it has them The players want to win this one no matter what the situ ation Kenny Rotzler said It doesnt matter whats on the line because CanyonNew Braunfels is always a big game Theres been a couple of years when New Braunfels had some great teams and we were not so great but went over there and gave them a tough For which already has secured a playoff spot a win would give them the district crown The title would be their first since the 1960s according to Rotzler Weve been asking around here and cant seem to find out when the last time Rotzler said A Canyon victory also would be the first at Unicorn gym in more than 15 years New Braunfels coach Larry Wilkins whose teams have never lost to the Cougars at home said the game repre sents a chance to achieve one of two goals We set two team goals at the begin ning of the he One was to reach the playoffs and the other was to win the district title Both are attainable at this point That its Canyon facing us is not important It only makes the game more fun Its good for both schools and good for the The game also spotlights two of the District 284A standings Team NB Canyon New Braunfels Smithson Valley lockhart Bastrop Hays Boys Corey Schwarz the No 3 scorer with ppg Both teams boast impressive win streaks The Cougars have taken five in a row and the Unicorns come in with a fourgame win streak The last loss was to Canyon 5543 on Jan 24 The game also pits the dis tricts offense Canyon ppg against the No 1 defense New Braunfels In the first meeting the Cougars shot 56 percent to the Unicorns 36 percent from the field but were only ahead by seven points with threeminutes left in the game The score was deceiving because they dominated us Wilkins said We cant let that happen if we want to win Friday night We have to HeraldZeitung photo by MICHAEL DARNALL Canyons Ricky Boehle left and New Braunfels Shae Wilkins renew a basketball bat tle at Unicorn gym tonight Both teams have plenty at stake The Cougars can clinch thedis trict crown with a victory The Unicorns can assure themselves a playoff spot and a shot at the title A district crown would be the first for the Cougars In more than 20 years Canyon has won five games in a row New Braunfels has taken four straight Rangers trek to Bastrop urge on Canyon By THOMAS GODLEY Sports Editor After a heartbreaking loss to Lockhart in overtime on Tuesday the Smithson Valley Rangers 44 find themselves in the position of rooting for Canyon A Cougar victory over New Braunfels 62 would be the only way for the Rangers to have a chance of squeezing into the playoffs A New Braunfels win means the Rangers are mathematically eliminated A loss means the Unicorns would travel to Smithson Valley next Tuesday with only a onegame edge and the possibility of falljng into a tie for the district ruruierup spot Canyon can do us a great favor by winning its last two Ranger coach John Valenzuela said We no longer control our own destiny All we can do now is hope the Comal Indepen dent School District teams win out the rest of the First the Rangers must take care of business on the road against the Bastrop Bears tonight The Bears were no match for Smithson Valley in the teams first meeting two weeks ago The Rangers won 6244 Freshman Jason Ivey will make his first start for the Rangers tonight Wed really like to play more than two more Valenzuela said Its unfortunate were in this situation but theres no point in talking about what could have been We have to go out and majce the best of the remaining season In a way I feel fortunate because if you had told me at the beginning of the season we could have four losses and still have a chance at the playoffs I wouldnt have bought The Rangers four district losses have been by an average of four points The coach added that making it into the play offs would be a good way to end the season and boost the program for next year We could build on something like that because we have several players coming he said The courts are on Highway information call 6257738 46 For more Cowboys sign Irvin for 5year million deal IRVING Texas AP A fiveyear million contract makes Dallas Cowboys
