district record and a share of first place the Smithson Valley Rangers ride into Unicorn gym on an wave of early success that few would have predicted Tagged during the preseason to finish some where at the bottom the Rangers darted out of the gates with impressive wins over Bastrop Hays and Canyon Ranger coach John Valcnzuela said his team may be sitting in fine shape at the moment but he is wary of what lies ahead The next few games could bring it all to halt Well find out where we stand after this SV coach John Valenzuela said I real ly believe its one of the biggest tests well encounter this season New Braunfels and Canyon are the hardest road games we New Braunfels which loss to Canyon on Tuesday stands at 22 and is looking to get back into district chase The game starts at 8 tonight New Braunfels has dominated the series at tiome for more than a decade The Rangers havent won it since 1982 according to both coaches Even then it came down to a shot at the NBs Brett Sweeney will help to get the Unicorns back on track tonight buzzer There were a few years in between when the two teams didnt play and were not in the same high school classification But NB coach Cliff Wilkins tosses aside his tory when looking at tonights matchup This year is Wilkins said Tra dition plays an important role but it also enables other teams to throw out their guns and come after you Canyon proved that the other Wilkins added that Rangers strong start isnt surprising He felt at the beginning of the season that all three Comal County schools would be solid When we played them last year I thought they were very solid on both sides of the he They have some veteran players in Bran don Parrott Kirk Golsch and Mike Fleming who are real steady So I am really not all that surprised at how well they have In a district where homecourt is a major advantage the Rangers are the only team to have won a game on the road so far Thats one win out of 12 games for the six 284A teams Smithson Valley came close to getting anoth er road win and a 40 start but a fourthquarter lead at Lockhart last Friday slipped away in the final minutes Valenzuela said the key to getting past New Braunfels will be containing guard Shae Wilkins who is averaging 24 points in district If we can hold him to 20 points I feel like we will have done a good job on him said Valenzuela The Rangers are allowing only 53 points per game on defense while the Unicorn offense averages 59 Coach Wilkins continues to look for balanced scoring from his starting five Of his starters only Shae Wilkins averages more than 10 points For Smithson Valley the offense relies on patient shot selection and opportunities from its defense With guard Charlie Wood out of the lineup the Rangers lose some firepower Wood who was averaging points in the first two district games has missed the last two games with an ankle injury and may be out for the rest of the season The game marks the first visit to Unicorn gym for Valenzuela as a head coach He has been there before as an assistant and says he is trying to erase the last trip from his mind Tonights game is a mustwin contest for the Unicorns Wilkins said A loss would put the team in a deep hole heading into the second Brandon and the viluy Rarw the long winless drought at New Braunfels The game begins at 8 tonight half of the district race Weve got our hacks to the Wilkins said I dont know if we can survive three loss es in this district That would mean giving up a twogame edge If we can hold serve then we have a legiti mate shot at it A win puts us at no worse than second Underdog fans and Chargers have nothing to lose Enough talk about Sundays Super Bowl being another onesided affair Its popular right now to say the 49ers will run away with it The game is not worth sitting through because its such a mismatch The real game was played two weeks ago in Candlestick Dallas Im not going along with it San Francisco is pegged by Las Vegas to win by a margin greater than Deions Sanders jersey number In my book thats easy money and all the more reason to sit in front of tube ThOITISS and root for the mighty underdog Chargers Though AFC teams have rarely come through for us it has been known to happen Jim Plunkett and the wildcard Oakland Raiders were the last bunch of wannabes to save the day That team had plenty of spunk and NFC like character which also can be said for this Charger squad San Diego is likable because they play smart fundamental football No gimmicks Just straightahead rushing and nofrills passing Natrone Means isnt a Barry Sanders nor Emmit Smith but the Charger running back has been known to scoot around and over a few defenders I say keep pounding the big guy off tackle Hes good for three or four yards per carry and hes bound to break one Who knows Maybe Humphries a guy who throws the long pass hotter than most NFL quarterbacks can slip a bomb or two past Deion The Charger wideouts arent spectacu lar but they showed against Rod Woodson and the Pittsburgh secondary that the deep routes are a definite threat Which brings us o the sobering reason why people arent all that excited about the big game in Miami After witnessing the Steclers Neil ODonnel dissect the San Diego secondary its almost scary to think what Steve Young and the 49ers can do Jerry Rice Brent Jones and John Taylor are no doubt hearing the immortal voice of NFL films describing the most prolific receiving trio in Super Bowl history It will take heroics from more than Junior Seau and Stanley Richards if Hie Chargers plan Longhorns hold back DePaul in overtime AUSTIN AP It may be of some solace to DePaul coach Joey Meyer that the 3point shooting barrage Texas put on against his team was unprecedented The Longhorns made a schoolrecord and SWCrecord 16 3point ers fueling a 14point comeback that resulted in a 9992 victory in double overtime Thursday night They take shots that I would yank our kids Meyer said There was one shot that I wasnt sure was even in the That would be from Roderick Anderson who had a careerhigh 33 points and six 3pointers many from far beyond the arc We dont think about how were shooting thats just the way we play It got us back in the Anderson said We know if were open we shoot Coach Tom Penders tells us to keep taking the shot even though it doesnt Even more crucial was Andersons foul shooting He hit six straight free throws in the two overtimes after having made only one of his first five 1 dislocated my thumb during the game on the first free throw and I couldnt get a rotation on the Anderson said I just buckled down for Reggie Freeman had 21 points including six 3pointers and Terrence Rencher scored 19 as Texas 114 overcame a 14point sec ondhalf deficit for its 19th straight home victory DePaul 87 was led by Tom Kieinschmidts 25 points and nine assists Will Macon had 16 points and Bryant Bowden had 13 points and 11 rebounds For the Blue Demons it was another tough defeat after a good road victory against CaliforniaSanta Barbara 8062 on Monday Vf to slow up the best offense in football It will take at least two interceptions and a fumble recovery And thats if they expect to beat the point spread To actually win they have to somehow gel Young out of the game A corner blitz or maybe a high hit when the runhappy quarterback goes around end could do the trick His departure should be and inte gral part of the defensive game plan Its a long shot but anything is possible in a game like this The 49crs are no doubt the more talented team But psychology plays a large factor All sorts of distracting thoughts are running through the players heads The Chargers believe they can win and so should all fans of the underdog Whats there to lose Thomas Godley
