New Braunfels Herald Zeitung (Newspaper) - January 26, 1995, New Braunfels, Texas Thursday, Jan. 26,1995 ■ Herald-Zeitung ■ 5 Arts and EntertainmentWinning logos selected for Youth ArtBeat ’95 Feel the pulse! Youth ArtBeat ‘95 is alive! The first heartbeat was seen, not heard, when Committee members viewed the many entries in the logo design contest recently. The winning entry, a modem graphic design created by Rachel Shipley, daughter of David and Carla Shipley, will be used on Youth ArtBeat t-shirts and programs. Rachel, an 8th grader at New Braunfels Middle School, is in the National Junior Honor Society and the Geography Club. Her talent in graphic arts has been recognized in other competitions. Rachel has been the state-wide winner in her age category in the Geography Awareness Week Poster Contest in past years and her creative pieces have won ribbons at the Comal County Fair. Another logo design of hers was selected last year for the Habitat for Humanity t-shirts. Rachel plans to attend college and graduate school, majoring in computer graphics. Second place was awarded to Bonnie McLellan, a 5th grader at Sts. Peter and Paul School and daughter of David and Theresa McLellan of San Marcos. Bonnie was not interested in art until second grade when she received an art award from a teacher who noticed her obvious talent. Bonnie received the art award again in the third and fourth grades. San Marcos Parks and Recreation recently chose her entry for the “Cycle San Marcos" logo and used the design on t-shirts. Amanda Schneider, a New Braunfels High School junior, took third place using her favorite medium of ebony (pencil) to draw her entry depicting historic downtown New Braunfels. Amanda, daughter of Herb and Jackie Schneider, was also a ribbon winner at the Comal County Fair. Currently in Art 111, Amanda plans to pursue a career as an art teacher or in the design field, in either interior design or architecture. The honorable mention winner was the project of four second-graders from Lone Star Elementary: Kelsey Ford, daughter of Tern and Steve Ford; Heather Fernandes, daughter of Melva and Jerry Fernandes; Andrea Holden, New Braunfels from Feb. 18-25. Students interested in entering artwork should contact the art teacher at their school or the Main Street Office in the Municipal Building (608-2100). Deadline for entries is Friday, February IO. The Youth ArtBeat ‘95 festival will be held on Saturday, February 25, in downtown New Braunfels. Entertainment will include music (instrumental or vocal), dance, dramatics, poetry, songwriting...and more. School groups and individuals are welcome to sign up. Young people in the New Braunfels/Canyon Lake/Bulverde area interested in performing during the festival should contact Jean Wilson at 609-0454 or the Main Street Office at 608-2100. Youth ArtBeat ‘95 is a project of the Main Street Program in cooperation with CISD, NBISD, Sis. Peter and Paul School, NB Christian Academy, NB NB, Hummel Museum, and the Down-Art League, Children’s Museum of town Association. Dean L Zincone, M.D. FAMILY PRACTICE W 908 E. According to their teacher Rebecca Martin, “Heather brought drumsticks to class for a news report. We talked about a ‘drum roll’ as an announcement, and ArtBeat was something to tell others about. They chose the palette for painting, the staff for music, and the ballet shoes for dance, to show things that will happen on ArtBeat day.” The design featuring a drum was designed by Kelsey and Heather. Andrea and Leanne joined them in bonging their artwork to completion. The artwork is currently on display in the window at Henne Hardware in downtown New Braunfels. T-shirts with Rachel’s colorful design will go on sale in early February.
