New Braunfels Herald Zeitung (Newspaper) - November 9, 1994, New Braunfels, Texas Fall colors mean fall work a By JOE Q. TAYLOR County Extension Agent Fait is the most colorful time of the year; trees are now changing from green to their vibrant colors of red, orange and yellow. Driving through the Texas Hill Country this time of this year is a favorite pastime for many folks. The changing of colors also means a passing of a season, and, with its passing, these trees are soon going to be dropping their leaves. These leaves are a natural mulch and fertilizer Many homeowners will soon be busy raking and bagging leaves. This is fine, but don't discard valuable leaves in our landfills; you can recycle tree leaves and save money in the process. I) Use leaves as a mulch or insulation in your flower beds and winter garden plants. These leaves are a natural mulch and fertilizer. Many homeowners will soon be busy raking and bagging leaves. This is fine, but don’t discard valuable leaves In our landfills, you can recycle tree leaves and save money In the process.’ 2) Mow over leaves with a mulching mower and allow the mulched leaves to stay on your grass. The leaves will decompose and actually add humus and nutrients into your lawn. 3) Compost leaves by building a compost pile and next spring, transfer them to your garden and see how plants respond to the soil you have built. 4) Save your leaves and plan to use them as a mulch for your spring garden to control weeds and also conserve water. Tree leaves arc a valuable natural resource that need to be recycled and re-used. Now I know there are some of your who are saying, “I just have too many leaves and I am already utilizing all that I can. What can I do with the rest?’ Well, here is a possible answer: you can bag ‘em up and take them to a I DESIGNATED PARK, scatter the !y , leaves out, and take your bags home with you. This will help you get ride of * !\ you leaves and also help mulch the park. Sounds like a win-win situation to me. The City of New Braunfels and the Texas Agricultural Extension Service are studying a plan to do just that. We are planning for two leaf drop days for t homeowners to bring and scatter leaves . j ,• at one of the parks here in New Braun- < •, feis.    ,;f; If you arc participating and would like to express your thoughts, contact 4' v Joe Taylor, Texas Agricultural Extension Service, at (210) 620-3440 on,*-, Wednesday, Nov. 16.
