New Braunfels Herald-Zeitung (Newspaper) - November 9, 1994, New Braunfels, Texas Wednesday Nov 9 1994 HeraldZeitung 5A Deer are a problem for motorists Dear Editor In a recent HeraldZeitung front page an accident was shown in which a collision occurred between a large deer and a small van on FM 2722 The van sustained considerable damage and nearly proved fatal to the driver I live outside the city just off FM 1863 In recent years I have ncsscd the deer population explode in our area The deer arc immune from predators or hunters and do immense damage to our vegetation I believe it is time Uial this prob lem of deer overpopulation be addressed by our county officials On CBS morning TV it showed a small town in Pennsylvania with a similar problem They chose as a solution to allow qualified sharp shooters using ammunition with a very short range to thin out their deer herds I think it is time we gave our situation some similar thought before innocent motorists arc killed in our county The life of a loved one is more important than that of a deer Jerry White New Braunfels Gun owners are not the problem Dear Fxlitor Asa patriotic American and a member of the National Rifle Asso ciation Im extremely concerned about the way the media has blamed gun owners for the rising tide of crime in our country To counter the myths that have surrounded the gun control debate the NRAs Wayne LaPierrc has just written a book entitled Guns Crime and This book is available in local bookstores right now More than half of your readers are gun owners Im writing to ask you to give them the fair and equal treat ment they deserve in the pages of your newspaper I urge you to begin carrying out this policy immediately by publishing a review of Guns Crime and Thank you for your consideration Lea Davidson Canyon Lake Stop the crazy liberals in Washington Dear Editor Attention gun owners and hunters I lovt my guns and hunting as much as most of you do But unless we slop these craxy liberals in Washing ton one year from now we may not be allowed to even target practice In the Brady II gun bill that has already been filed in Congress there is a provision that you cannot discharge a firearm without having the written permission of every land owner within a seven mile radius I know this sounds unbelievable but these people are after our guns and our and whats left of the Constitution We need to quit being couch pota toes and lying back in front of the TV We need to unite very quickly or we will lose rights we can never recover without bloodshed I believe the constitutional militia is the best vehicle to accomplish this and espe cially since it is forming in all 50 states It is comprised of people from the grass roots like you and me who arc fed up We have to stop being complacent because this may be our last chance A very important rally of the statewide militias is on Nov 12 at noon in front of the Alamo If our crowd is large enough we will gel the attention of Austin and just maybe Washington also Some people will come several hundred miles and I would hope several hundred from Comal County could come 30 or 40 miles And hunters as I wrote at the top get your priorities in order Melvin L Kriewald Canyon Lake Home town service was great Dear Editor It was Friday morning when the phone rang I was awake but not up but had a gut feeling about the call When I picked up the phone and heard my mothers voice I knew mat my Dad had died It was not a total surprise he would have been 87 on Christmas day We knew his condi 1 lion was terminal and the Hospice nurse had said days or maybe weeks but when we said goodbye Sunday he was finishing his breakfast of egg oatmeal and coffee We said we will sec you in two weeks and caught our plane in Amarillo 10 come home We were so confident that Dorothy left at noon yesterday for her long We Love You planned annual trip lo visil her parents and family in Ohio She always visits in October lo enjoy Die Apple Festival in Ashley c and bring home a supply of fresh apples I called Dorothy at lo let her know and since I had nol personally made a plane reservalion in Ihc past 10 years asked her what should 1 She said just call Sue Kargcr at Roadrunner and she will do every I started packing and called Roadrunner at and heard the machine say office hours arc till but in case of emergency call Sue at I lold Sue my prob lem She responded gel ready to come by the office for your ticket I walked inlo Roadrunner al Sue mei me wilh a lickcl on a flight saying this is the only flight today and since you arc by yourself you will never be able lo park and make Ken can take you Ken was half way out of his chair saying sure Ill pick you up in After a quick sprint to the gale I walked on ihe plane just as Ihc door closed Now lhats home town ser vice And ihcnsomc Thank you Sue and Ken Kargcr at Roadrunner Travel Agency Jim and Dorothy Mercer New Braunfels Lack of leadership among CISD board Dear Editor A friend and I were present al ihc CISD Board mcciing on Scpl 26 al which some individuals made very dis paraging remarks about board member Douglas Kirk and asked for his resig nation We were appalled by the lack ol leadership shown by the school board presidenl of CISD in presiding over this meeting Our concerns on what transpired that evening are twofold Our first concern is the CISD board presidents choice to again violate the schools own poli cies and procedures Having attended numerous board meetings we arc very aware of the Audience Participation Protocol card which must be filled out by those wishing lo address the board This card addresses procedures to be adhered by both citizens and board members The fourth rule of this card states Persons speaking on the same topic need to appoint a spokesperson to pre sent their We obtained copies of cards filled out by each of the per sons who spoke that night In the blank which specifics Other members of your group two members specifically stated each persons name from their group Since these individuals arrived as a group staled in wriling names ol members of the group and spoke on the same topic this conslilutcd ti vio lation of the fourth rule The second paragraph of this same card further slates Derogatory com ments aimed at an individual will not be Again the leadership of this board allowed these altacks to con tinue It further appears this power structure feels it has the privilege to pick and choose which rules lo enforce In this case it chose not to enforce a rule that would further its own agenda lo conlinuc lo humiliate ridicule and to discredit Mr Kirk Our second concern regards some very disturbing chain of events which occurred after my friend and I approached the ihrce individuals 10 discuss iheir comments To our sur prise two of the individuals who spoke mat night wrote to the superintendent alleging they were approached somewhere out of a very dark park ing lot by two individuals an Hispan ic female and an Hispanic male I rcc these two from being at the board The individual went on to say we made them concerned lor their safety Without any invcsugauon of the alle gations the board president stated We have clcctcdto hire a uniformed guard to be at each Whoever is responsible for the action ol hiring security purely on allcgauons is guilly of further perpetuating cul tural paranoia Hispanics who lurk in very dark parking But even more troubling it contributes to already strained relations in this district The decision to hire security was 1 never put on the agenda 2 never vot ed on by the board and 3 were based on pure allegations Who really made the decision to hire security and spend taxpayer dollars without any action taken on the part of UK CISD school board Isnt this against the law ioriaTerpeninj David Barboza With time and concerned citizens Dear Editor The of New Braunfcls owe a debt that they never bill to the Being of a suspicious nature from toll fraud years with the Bell sys tern and when advance payments senl my credil down ihc drain al NBU and then lo receive a rflock reply Youre credit is no good Il smacked me something is terribly wrong My lime wilh the Telco permits my intuition to read Mr John Dicrk scn as a most honorable individual and any advise or suggestions he may have for the Trustees falls on deaf after all Ahm older been to ihc gale and back Sec I commend Mr Rhcinlandcr for retaining ihc crcdihilily his office deserves Our community is blessed with an excellent chamber of commerce sec ond lo nohc keeping a balanced industrial base supported by a clean air tourist winter and summer business With a deserving public approval any utility management can be changed and replaced with one sensi tive lo their customer With the Herald overview I suspect these slurring replies will cease For certain the city council and ihc public docs not expect it to do the job the utility commission at Austin docs provide However it is my belief with a change in capricious and arbitrary behavior time and cortccrncd cili shall bring this about Marc Herman New Braunfels Hey ycure half way there Why dent v u ccast a while Love
