New Braunfels Herald Zeitung (Newspaper) - November 9, 1994, New Braunfels, Texas GOF captures top of ticket, Dents hold on down-ballot Republicans made history by caping the top of the Texas ticket, but >emocrats retained control of many ther key statewide offices in this ear's balloting. For the first time since Reconstruct ion, the GOP on Tuesday laid claim to oth U.S. Senate seats and the gover-lorship. Republican George W. Bush, on of the former president, ousted Democratic Gov. Ann Richards, while Republican Sen. Kay Bailey Hutchison handily defeated Derfiocratic challenger Richard Fisher. Mrs. Hutchison serves with Republican U.S. Sen. Phil Gramm, who faces his next senatorial election in 19% and also is preparing for a run at the presidency that year. GOP chairman Tom Pauken credit ed the victory to a unified party and a1* strong effort to get out the vote. “I think people sense that we’re heading in the wrong direction and we’ve got to get back on the right track,” Pauken said. Texas Agriculture Commissioner Rick Perry, a Republican, was handily re-elected, defeating Marvin Gregory, a Democratic dairy farmer from Sul phur Springs. Republicans swept the Texas Railroad Commission and gained control of the Texas Supreme Court. The GOP also gained some ground in Congress and the state Senate, as at least two incumbent Democrats lost: U.S. Rep. Bill Sarpalius of Amarillo and state Sen. Carl Parker of Port Arthur, who had become one of the state’s most powerful lawmakers after 31 years in the Legislature. But Democrats retained several major statewide posts. Lt. Gov. Bob Bullock easily defeated Republican Tex Lezar for his second four-year term. The lieutenant governor presides over the Senate and is arguably the most powerful politician in Texas. After trailing in early returns, Democratic Texas Attorney General Dan Morales pulled ahead of Republican challenger Don Wittig to win his second term in office. Democratic Comptroller John Sharp also handily bested his GOP challenger, political newcomer Teresa Doggett WORD board may tax stored boats ay CRAIG HAMMETT Staff Writer The Comal County Water Oriented Recreation District will hold a workshop Wednesday night at the new American Legion Hall in Sattler, 7:15 p.m. The WORD board and the county lommissioners will discuss proposed changes to WORD regulations to present to the State Legislature. Among the changes are provisions for taxing dry storage rental for boats and boat parking on land up to five percent. The dry storage rate is just one of 17 separate items addressed in the taxation changes. Also included is a proposition to change the taxation rate for tube rentals to up to IO percent. The board felt undue cost came from tubes relative to the cost of rental. The board has also proposed a change regarding bonds for the issuance of restraining orders. Inman said the county would not have to put up a bond every time someone does not pay a tax. County Judge Carter Casteel said she would attend the meeting but did not know how many commissioners would. The Commissioners Court meets Thursday morning and could accept or deny the proposals of the WORD board. If approved, the court would then send these recommendations to the legislature for changes to the WORD •legislation. “The meeting itself will be an open workshop discussion between the WORD board and Commissioners Court,” said WORD General Manager Jim Inman. “...The last time this happened, we got caught short on time ” The Most Local News The Wednesday, Sept 28, Herald-Zeitung was 20 pages, quite a bit smaller than the nearby metropolitan dailies, but it contained 86 local articles. It also contained 449 names of local people, and 42 local people had their photo in the paper that one day. How many days would you have to read another newspaper to get that much local news?
