VOTE Republicans dominate county By CRAIG HAMMETT Staff Writer Nearly Comal County voters cast their ballots Tuesday in an election that saw Republi cans dominate in Comal County as expected Republicans won on all contested tickets in Comal See countys County except two precinctby congressional District 28 Precinct results with Frank Tejeda and Page 6A GOP candidates win all but two contested races in county State Senate District 21 with Judith Zaffirini On a day when Republicans gained control of the Congress and the governors chair Comal County Republicans dominated the polls as expected A total of voted a straight Republican ticket roughly one quarter of the total voter turnout In the race George W Bush won all but three of the 30 precincts reporting votes cap turing almost 70 percent of Comal County votes Ann Richards totaled or about 30 percent Kay Bailey Hutchison also dominated the Senate race with 73 percent of the votes just more than to challenger Richard Fishers She carried all but two of the 30 precincts reporting Republican Rep Lamar Smith carried the county with nearly 90 percent of the vote for District 21 County Clerk Joy Streater had projected about voters The actual total was out of registered voters as people took advantage of good weather Absentee votes totaled or about oncthiid of the electionday total Linnell Hinojosa of the county clerks office said a heavy turnout was had especially in Precinct 11 in Garden Ridge where 65 percent of the registered voters showed up We ran out of said Hinojosa whose office had to offer an extra 32 ballots to that precinct Robison wins over Van Horn By ROGER CROTEAU City Editor New Braunfels attorney Jack Robi son defeated Democrat Jeff Van Horn last night to win the right to replace retiring Judge Robert T Pfeuffer on the bench of the 207th District Court The district covers Comal Caldwell and Hays counties With most of the vote count ed Robison a Republican had a comfortable lead of Jack Robison to There were still several boxes to count in Hays and Caldwell counties but both can didates acknowledged that the out come was clear Robison ran strongest in Comal County his home piling up a vote margin here to Van Horn enjoyed a more than two to one margin in Caldwell County to 970 with four boxes still uncounted but turnout for the race there appeared to be light Van Horn also had a 203 vote lead in the Hays County to with 68 percent of the vote counted I am Robison said It has been a year and a half running for a job that put my family through financial stress to get and that will pay less than 1 have made in But Robison said he wanted to serve as judge because he felt he could serve the counties better than the oth er prospective candidates 1 was also very unhappy with the perception of our legal he said Of the three branches of government the one area that is still very functional is the judiciary would like to be a part of Robison said the biggest factor Tuesday night was simply running as a Republican on a big night for the GOP Robison has been in private law practice in the New Braunfels area for 13 years and also spent a year as a briefing attorney for the Texas Court of Criminal Appeals His opponent Democrat Jeff Van Horn conceded defeat in an inter view Wednesday morning Its obvi ous what the outcome is going to be I attribute it to being a matter of par tisan he said Im glad its over with and Im ready for a normal life again I enjoyed meeting people but there are other things about the political process I didnt enjoy and will never Asked if he handily By ROBERT STEWART Special to the HeraldZeitung Republican Pet 4 Comal County Commissioner Morris Moe Schwab won a second term over Democratic challenger Lois Duggan by a vote count of to Schwab said his victory with 73 percent of the vote showed that the Water Ori ented Recreation District concept of tourists paying for law enforce ment and litter cleanup with user fees is catching on People dont understand that Im trying to save the taxpayers money WORD is the whole Schwab said The guy that put her up to run ning against me doesnt understand the issue Why should the people of Garden Ridge or Hunter or Fischer Store pay for the extra police on the Schwab said he feels he deserves a second term I fed that the last four years Ive done a decent he said Weve elevated a whole bunch of people Our Road Department is in fine shape Weve got the best roads of all sur rounding counties Our Sheriffs Department is second to none 1 cant take the honors for all of that but I was onefifth of it Another thing I am proud of is we got our workers wages up to a living salary It wasnt long ago we had employees eligible for food stamps This is what upsets run this lady against me because she is antiWORD One per son on a fiveman commissioners court is just going to be a thorn in the side As long as youve got the lead ership and people that will trust the leader it will Schwab said he looked forward to the coming term including working with new Pet 3 Commissioner Danny Scheel Im looking forward to it Danny Scheel is a working man He is from the working people This is going to be beneficial I want to keep doing the same thing Ive done and help the Lois Duggan said she was honored to participate in the democratic process and offer a choice to voters I thank all of those who had faith in me and voted for she said You never win when you offer yourself for public never win or up to the voters and I hope theyre happy with the choices they made It has nothing to do with
