I Herald-Zeitung ■ Sunday, Nov. 6, 1994 ‘Boathouse’ has audience rolling in the aisles H3>: mot1 ^Ifri’By SUSAN FLYNT ENGLAND .^,.w>Staff Writer “The Wurst Little Boathouse in ^Texas’’ is neither “worst” nor “bore ” In u 1 fact, it’s a rollicking romp that will leave your stomach aching from laughing so much. This is a melodrama, the old-fashioned, Snidely Whiplash, girl-noitied-to-the-train-tracks kind — only lr fjust a bit twisted, and chock full of ai npuns and double entendres, v ! Be ready to be a part of the production. “The fun of melodrama is that this is a participation sport,” said Eliz-,,abcth Elliott. The give and take ;r ^between cast and audience escalates Jijyjhe hilarity to raucous heights. The ^ audience is “warmed up” to display „rits emotion without reserve before the actual play begins. Trying not to give too much away, this display of Eliza-Elliott’s range as a performer and to connect with an audience worth the admission price. Boarhouse” has three Boar sisters, Ura, and Notta. Kelly Atchison as ma. is hilarious as soon as she utters a Review word with her squeaky, whiny voice. Joy Lindsey performs with real professionalism as Ura. She makes her character believable so that every once in a while you forget she’s supposed to be ridiculous — then she catches you unawares with a comic turn. Her timing is flawless; it doesn’t draw attention to itself. Lara Wright as Notta (as close to an innocent maiden as this show gets) broadens and stylizes her characterization from “Little Shop of Horrors” quite successfully. It works quite well in this venue. Her funniest moments are when she breaks out of character for surprise asides to the audience. Brian Ore as Timothy Dimwit, the hero, appears on stage for the first time in ''Boarhouse," according to Elizabeth Elliott. His broad slapstick is a joy to behold, and sure to induce belly laughs. Performing this sort of physical, athletic comedy this well is difficult even for the most experienced actors. Bravo, Brian. Lou Garza is delightful as the slimy bad guy, B. B. Wolfe. His mobile facial expressions are emphasized by well done make-up. I would have loved to see his actions as broad and exaggerated as his face. Good interplay and timing between the characters, especially Notta, Wolfe and Dimwit, gave polish to the comedy The narrator, played by Elizabeth Elliott, did more than narrate. She kept the production flowing and the audience involved. She also wrote, this naughty little play. I hope she has ambitions to write more and bigger plays. I would be first in line to see one. As usual at Circle Arts, the production elements were seamless; always supporting, never detracting, thanks in very large part to the skill and endless work of Roberta Elliott. The only thing I might have changed design-wise were the colors of Nona's costume. They seemed a teeny bit strong to me, and said "bad guy" rather than "protagonist." Music for "Boarhouse" was provided by the ever-professional and ever-gracious Barbara Houde, one of those artists we in New Braunfels are lucky to. have. Go see this play. You'll get your daily exercise just from laughing and rolling in the aisles. Catering ♦ by Weddings & , Special Events? S ♦    210-606-3042    ? You’ve probably collected lots of great recipes for barbecued ribs, chicken, steaks and burgers. But now there are two ingredients you won't need. Charcoal and lighter fluid.
