New Braunfels Herald Zeitung (Newspaper) - October 5, 1994, New Braunfels, Texas Wednesday, Oct. 5,1994 ■ Herald-Zeitung ■ Page 9A Sub From8A NBMS harriers finish second solicited. Kickoff is slated for 7 p.m. ■ Marble Falls 20, SVHS JV19 SMITHSON VALLEY — The Smithson Valley High School junior varsity football team battled back from a 20-0 deficit, only to fall a point shy against Marble Falls last Thursday. The Mustangs used long pass plays to roll up three first-half touchdowns. But, in the second half, the Rangers’ defense held Marble Falls to just one first down. That gave the SVHS offense a chance to rally. Erie Warchol scored the Rangers’ first touchdown on a 25-yard run in the third quarter. Billy Grindle added the extra point to cut Marble Falls’ lead to 20-7. In the fourth quarter, Brandon Schultz scored on a 3-yard run, but the extra point failed, leaving the Rangers with a seven-point deficit Grindle then hit Heath Renfrew with a 19-yard touchdown pass in the final minute, but a two-point conversion attempt failed and the Rangers suffered their first loss of the season. SVHS will host Canyon at 7 p.m. Thursday. ■ NBHS frosh 29, Lamer 6 The Unicorns’ freshmen football team overcame a sluggish start last Thursday to remain unbeaten on the season. P.A. Vargas got NBHS (5-0) on the scoreboard with a 42-yard touchdown run. Quarterback Justin Vogt then threw touchdown passes of 12 and 38 yards to Steve Simpson. The final Unicorns’ score came on a 24-yard run by Simpson. Cruz Acosta led the NBHS offensive line surge against the Vikings, while Eric Posey, Adam Trollinger, Brian Masch, Cody Guthrie and Chad Wehe had solid defensive contributions. NBHS will play at Hays Consolidated on Thursday at 5 p.m. SUNBURST^ . / BEAUTY PAGEANT r &BABY CO WUST! v V „ GIRLS Ahs ti The O" 4CBS Patio 8l Cantina Oct. 5 - GULES GLIESCHE Od. 6 - BOP SAVANT Oct. 7 - STINGRAYS Od. 8 - TEXAS EDGE Now open on The Patio Thurs. nights Music 9:30-1:30 - Open 'till 2am *1 River Rd. ir ZW» OU 7«~ Sam * 620-RAFT ‘Deborah Stokes, M.D. INTERNAL MEDICINE New Patients Welcome Medicare Assignment Accepted Na Referral Necessary xmmaasmmssmm 264 West Mill St (210) 629-2040 New Braunfels, TX. David Armenta added 32 rushing yards for SVHS, while Valin Klock tacked on 15 yards on the ground and caught a 17-yard pass. Quarterback Taylor Jordan was 5 of 11 for 53 yards in the game. From staff reports The New Braunfels Middle School girls’ and boys’ cross country teams each placed second at a meet in Moulton recently. The girls’ squad was led by Crystal Clark, who finished first individually, and Jodi Slaughter, who was second individually. Other finishers for NBMS were Jodi Hetchler, Bonnie Gudgell and Teresa Lopez. The boys’ team’s second-place effort included three top IO individual finishes. Jacob Villanueva was eighth for the NBMS, while Andy Schmid finished ninth and Jeremiah Mills was 10th. Michael Kendall and Daniel Gibbons also finished in the top 20 for NBMS. The teams competed in Kerrville on Saturday. \ Correction In past editions of Sports Day, it has been incorrectly reported drat Smithson Valley High School began playing varsity football in 1981. However, the Rangers’ program actually began on the varsity level in 1976. Sports Day strives to present accurate information. We regret the error.
