Wendy Orr Lara Wright and their mothers Each debutante received a floral chintz photo album as a party favor Small cotton town may disappear after 70 years DRAW Texas the first time in 70 years the autumn cotton harvest here will be a silent one Missing will be the purr of the cotton gin that kept this shrinking burg on the map Citing an off cotton crop and outdated equipment the Draw Paymaster Gin has closed for this years harvest gin manager Bobby Mack Furlow said And with needed to update it its unclear if it will ever reopen It didnt matter how loud the gin was it was music to our Pat Hensley 73 told the Lubbock AvalancheJournal during a break from his daily domino game in the modest gin office For IS years Hensley has spent mornings playing dominoes with his buddies at the gin Before then they met at the old gin office built in the early 20s People went hunting for the big bright lights They went to places like ODonnell and Pat Hensley If the gin closes for good the church will be the only nonresidential building left in Draw a town of 20 south of Lubbock At its acme in the 20s and 30s Draws popula tion reached about 200 Shoppers could browse four grocery stores and buy from a local blacksmith The first major post office closed in 1935 Hensley says followed by the school in the early40s That really hurt when the school says Fern Barnes 70 a lifetime Draw resident Since then Draw has slowly declined People went hunting for the big bright Hensley says They went to places like ODonnell and Taho But the gin always kept Draw on the map Farm ers from miles around would haul in cotton In 1988 the gin processed a record bales An aerial photograph on the gin office wall shows Draw clogged with cottonpacked trailers that year The locals arent packing up their
