annual Chili Cookoff Twentytwo teams competed for top honors in the contest which was held on the post grounds Jim Pickett Second Vice Comman der said the event is the main fundrais er for the organization which sponsors college scholarships for local high school seniors and sends high school juniors to Boys State each year among other civic endeavors The event included mostly local and area teams not statewide entrants as in other sanctioned chili events some thing Pickett wants to keep It want to keep it for said Pickett who plans to hold the event each March or April It was Not many people would travel to another continent to cut and style hair but Biljy Turner Turner owner of The Strand salon in New Braunfels recently traveled to London to participate in the World Hair Show Turner was a member of the Altieri Power Hair team which was the only team invited to the hair show Four people were on the team Three of those were members of the Altieri family Turner was the fourth team member Turner said the team was worried at first that the English would not like the show since it used more of a hip hop rock theme It was questionable whether or not they would get into our show since it was a hiphop said Turner People like Sasoon and Toni Guy are reserved and laid back We predicted that they wouldnt get into it Actually they loved it We were the first team ever to go to London and do the World Hair he said The World Hair Show also includes Silly Turner Rlccardo Altieri Catherine Altieri and Tony Altieri are back from London the World Hair Olympics and the World Hair Championship The Altieri team did not pariticipate in the com petitions but instead concentrated on the educational portion of the show He said the team was invited to the event because of its hospital auxiliary president and Ms Margie Council chairperson of McKennas Red Cross Hospital Volunteers each spoke on the milestones of their hospital volunteer organizations Tim Brierty summed up the feelings held by the McKen na staff by saying We are very grateful to our Auxiliary and Red Cross volunteers for the countless hours they donate at the hospital each and every day of the year So
