The National Weather Service continued their Installation of a Doppler Radar system at the New Braunfels Airport The Doppler Radar which Indicates high winds as well as precipita tion will replace a radar system In Hondo Doppler Radar dome installed at airport By JENNIFER ROMPEL Staff Writer The National Weather Service Doppler Radar station is one step closer to completion after the radar dome was hoisted on to the tower Wednes day morning The tower which will house a Doppler radar is located at the New Braunfels Municipal Airport According to Area Manager Al Dreumont the site is now ready to accept equipment which will set the entire operation in motion The equipment is expected to begin being delivered by April 5 Dreumont said there is no completion date set at this time He said it should take between six to sev en weeks to install and test the new equipment He said both hardware and software must be tested The plans for the project began in the mid 1980s Construction began in April of 1993 Offi cials officially accepted the building from the contractor Wednesday Dreumont said the staff plans to move to the new location April 6 through April 8 The office is being moved from San Antonio A small office will remain at the San Antonio International Air port for observation purposes By 1996 the National Weather Service is expected to close rhree more of its offices in Austin Del Rio and Hondo The New Braunfels location will be a major forecast station for this said Dreumont The New Braunfels location was chosen because it was in a good area to get maximum cov erage according to Dreumont It is between Austin and San Antonio and is the best place to get coverage for the metropolitan area and the Air Force he said The Doppler radar will be available for use by television stations and others who are in need of the service Conference today at civic center Kelleher to receive Texan of the Year award From staff reports Texas Competing in the Global Economy will be the major thrust of the 28th Annual Texas Legislative Conference which will begin today and continue through Friday in New Braunfels Herb Kelleher chairman board and chief executive officer of Southwest Airlines will receive the Texan of the Year Award at a reception this evening at the New Braunfels Civic Center At Friday Kelleher will be the opening speaker and Lieutenant Governor Bob Bullock will address the conference at the noon luncheon Kelleher will discuss government regular tion on business according to Max Sher man dean of the LBJ School of Public Affairs at the University of Texas in Austin and chair man of the Conference Advisory Committee Other speakers on the program addressing the opportunities for Texas in the Global Econ omy include Don Newquist chairman International Trade Commission Dave Osborn director of international operations South western Bell Corporation Bob Krueger former ambassador at large to Mexico Tom Stell man director international deal on the purchase of six water systems today The purchase will allow users of the systems to in effect own their own systems and con trol use as members of the corporation The CLWSC will buy the water systems which include everything from the pumps to the lines from current owners which include Riverside Water Owner Triple Peak Ranch James T W W Water Co Inc David General Util ities and Utilities Al Jones and Richard Miller and Northlake Estates Jack Som CoBank a rural American cooperative bank out of Englewood Colo near Denver financed the purchase Tinker McK night ViceChairman of the CLWSC said the loan package of S million also includes funds for the repairs and maintenance of the systems Users will become owners of the systems through their membership in CLWSC which includes over meters Once the system is purchased by the cor poration the systems are owned by their cus tomers who have the opportunity to operate their own systems and control said McK night The nonprofit corporation hopes to build a surface water treatment plant and sewage treat ment facility at the lake sometime in the future Impending items include a county water study into the waterdeprived western por tions of the county McKnight said funding from the Texas Water Development Board for the study and other projects is dependent on the CLWSC becoming a working ownership by system users which todays closing allows The closing was expected to take place River law enforcement to be discussed tonight By JENNIFER ROMPEL Staff Writer Law enforcement efforts on the Guadalupe River this tourist season should be equal to those of last year according to New Braunfels and Comal County officials A group of panelists will be meeting tonight at the Friends For Rivers meeting to discuss this years plans to control activities on the Guadalupe River The meeting will be at 7 in the Herb Schneider Room of the Vic toria Bank and Trust building Panelists will include Comal County Judge Carter Casteel Coma County Sheriff Jack Bremer New Braunfels Police Chief Dick Headen and a representative from the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department Casteel Bremer and Headen all said they expect this seasons efforts will minor those of last year I think we are going to see much of the said Casteel We will see people offi cers who have done this once before They will be familiar with it and have a better idea of where they need to I dont see us doing anything different than last said Headen We will be let ting people know about the presence of offi cers on the river and the potential of more officers on the river That is a big Headen said his departments efforts will center on getting rid of troublemakers Were not out there to cause anyone enjoy ing themselves any trouble We just want to provide a decent environment for people to enjoy the he said We got the message well on its way last year and we will do it again this said Headen The word could get around quickly if out fitters would simply tell people when they rent a raft tot we officers are all working the said Headen Bremer agreed that the message is getting out and said he hopes to see a difference on the river after the first month of summer We made a statement last year Some peo ple will try to see if we really meant it Once they are convinced we are serious about hav ing people respect the private property of the citizens of Comal County we hope they will conduct themselves as they would at This year will reinforce our message I believe in 30 days after the season starts we will see the fruits of our labor and next year
