New Braunfels Herald-Zeitung (Newspaper) - February 2, 1994, New Braunfels, Texas Arts Entertainment Wednesday Feb 2 SPOTLIGHT ON Music has power far impossible dream SOUND OF all know that music doesnt affect wars But a certain cellist doesnt agree In his latest book Maybe Maybe Robert Fulghum tells the storyand sad we should repeat it Ill try to do it justice Sitting in front of a bakery where mortar fire struck a breadline killing 22 people is Vedran Smailovic dressed in formal wear and playing his cello As a member of the Sarajevo Op6ra Orchestra there is little he can do about hate and war He knows he might be shot or beaten Even so every day fro 22 days he has braved sniper and artillery fire to do the only thing he knows to do He plays his cello Now most everyone in Sarajevo knows his name and face and Croats Serbs and Muslims alike place flowers to enshrine where he played But Sara jevo is not the only place hes known Beliz Brother a Seattle Washington artist read his story and then orga nized 22 cellists to play in 22 public places in Seattle days On the final day they played together In ftont of a store window displaying 22 bumedout bread pans and 22 roses People came And the story was passed on Later in Washington 22 cellists played the day Mr Clinton was sworn intb office Who might hear The cynic says one cellist cannot stop a war But we must never feel foolish for believing that whenever someone takes the risk to address the world with truth the world may stop what it is doing and hear When we cease believing this the music will surely stop Meanwhile a cellist plays in the streets of THE MUSIC time with the lovely sounds of the Community Chorale doing a very spe cial conceit at 3 this coming Sun day Feb 6 at New Braunfels Pres byterian
