cxwld mean stu dents at area schools will spend more time in the classroom but some parents are concerned the proposed change will mean their children will not have time for extracurricular activities New recommendations from the Texas Com missioner of Education requiring 24 credits including additional math science social studies and foreign language credits has caused both of Comal Countys school districts to start consid ering block scheduling of classes The recommendation is for implementation in 1996 so we have to do something said John Turman Principal of New Braunfels High School can get 24 credits now but they would have to give up electives The block scheduling will give them the opportunity to earn up to 32 New Braunfels Independent School District had an informational meeting with parents Mon day evening The NBISD board will hear a pre sentation on the proposed block scheduling pro gram at the next board meeting Jan 30 The Theyre concerned because its new and many of their questions are legiti mate But recommenda tions become require ments and it is to be imple mented in 1996 we have to do something John Turman Comal Independent School District board will hear an informational report on block scheduling tonight at their pm meeting at the Smithson Two hundred parents attended the NBISD meeting Mondayund theschod presented the reaf sons block scheduling was being considered They include state recommendations requiring An additional math credit above Algebra II sudvas precalculus or Calculus An additional science credit above Biology such as Biology ri Chemistry H or Physics U An additional social studies credit above as World Geogra A third credit in a foreign language Currently students at NBHS have the oppor tunity to take classes during 24 periods through their fouryear high school session Those classes currently include electives Stu dents would have to eliminate those reduce involvement iri extracurricular activities attend summer school or take advantage of early class opportunities to acquire the recommended 24 necessary credits to graduate The NBISD plan is calledthe Accelerated Block Schedule and would consist of a school day with four 90 minute blocks of time for classes arid to earn up to 32 credits in fouryears Questions concerning issues such as how bus and beliffdcted were sllso addressed at the meeting with the fol lowing information provided by the district No changes in the bus schedules is anticipated however there be a 10 minute change in the start of the school day with tutorials beginning at The lunch schedule would change from three to four lunch periods Staff size would not have to increase because under the block scheduling 642 sections could be offered compared to 494 sections under the cur rent system r Extracurricular activities before or after school would not be affected by the schedule and stu dents will have more opportunities to take elec tives with the block scheduling With activities such as Band Athletics Choir and JROTC which students may participate in for four years choic es will have to be made in the junior and senior years to either take a class or attend summer school in order to participate in two or more of these activities School officials said this would be a problem regardless of the Turman said many parents are concerned about the program Theyre
