Friday night New Braunfels dropped to 34 By RICHARD TIJERINA Sports Editor New Braunfels can chalk Friday night up as a learning experience but the Unicorns 4846 loss to San Marcos was a painful lesson to take The Unicorns matched the Rattlers point for point in the fourth period but it was a series of crucial misses at the free throw line which doomed New Braunfels New Braunfels made only threeof nine free throw attempts in the fourth period yet still was just one shot away from overtime and just three inches away from goahead basket Down 4441 with just over a minute to go Shae Wilkins launched a three point shot from the left side which tied the game But the referee ruled that Wilkins1 right foot was just over the threepoint line and the Unicorns instead found themselves down a point which they could never regain Wilkins did hit a lastsecond three pointer with less than two seconds to go but New Braunfels couldnt come up with the turnover on the inbounds pass and San Marcos escaped with their ninth straight victory to open the season It hurts to get beat especially when youve played so said Cliff Wilkins whose Unicorns dropped to 3 4 on the season I dont know if we can play any better defensively They did everything we asked of them except put the ball in the basket New Braunfels missed six free throws in the final period three on front ends of oneandone situations It was a close game throughout as SCOREBOARD BOYS Smithson Valley 72 TMI 69 over at Antonian Tournament Canyon 47 Smithville 38 at Gonzales McDonalds Classic Uvalde 72 St Anthony 35 at Antonian Tournament both the Unicorns and Rattlers settled into a defensive game which saw both teams score well below their season averages New Braunfels took a 2624 lead at halftime when David Gomez hit a layup under the basket as time expired But the Rattlers made defensive adjust ments at halftime and started the sec ond half with six straight points the last fourbyMaxSchleder But down 3026 the Unicorns went on a 122 run Wilkins got things start ed when he canned an open jump shot from the right wing San Marcos responded with a basket to go up 32 28 but Brent Powell immediately answered with a strong move in the left post and a basket to cut the Rattler lead to two Wilkins hit a basket from the free throw line to tie the game with remaining in the third period then the See UNICORNS Page 12A SWC turns out the loser in race for Texas recruits ow that local high school football is history for 1993 the next big ques tion in store for Comal County at least in regards to football will be recruiting season The million dollar question is Where will Todd Mitchell go Only Todd Mitchell could know that answer But chaces are hes still undecided and will be for some time However there is much specula tion about the states top 4 A rusher going to Notre Dame USC and even Florida State Speculation is nothing more than speculation Nevertheless that spec ulation lends itself to the trend that has plagued the Southwest Confer ence for the last decade It gets looked over by our own athletes Not that Mitchell has in fact done that He probably hasnt given it a second thought But the rumor excluded any SWC school Why do our best players look beyond the Red River or the Sabine River to continue the rest of their careers Some will argue that Texas and Texas have had exceptional recruiting classes the last two years Mark Lyon Trust me Youll lose that argument Thanks to the great football state of Texas Miami Florida State Florida UCLA Nebraska and Colorado have had much better success recruiting here than we did Odds are a high school athlete can play for a national championship there and stands a pretty good chance of being drafted by an NFL team if he merely breaks the starting lineup in one of those The most severe blow to the SWC documented so far in liistory have been the unfortunate scandals brought forth by overzeal ous alumni Weve seen Pay for Play at SMU Employed but dont work for pay at and then the Jenkins Film Follies at UH There is really too much to mention in this See LYON Page 12A TODD This year in Comal County you knew who they meant By RICHARD TIJERINA
