New Braunfels Herald Zeitung (Newspaper) - December 5, 1993, New Braunfels, Texas Sunday, Dec. 5, 1993 ■ Herald-Zeitung ■ 7 A Brady bill survey results mixed, but majority disagree The results of the survey question “Do you agree with the passage of the ‘Brady Bill’ were mixed, although a majority did not agree with the passage of the bill. The bill, which is intended to curb gun violence, is named for former White House press secretary James Brady, who was wounded in an assassination attempt on President Reagan. The measure imposes a five-day waiting period for purchasing hand guns and requires a background check by local police. In a small response, 60 percent said they disagreed with the passage of the bill. Half of those opposed to the bill said criminals would still have access to guns. “Knife — Gun; always available in the hands of the no-gooders. Like tires in WWII days — some folks had them always — the rest of us walked.” “No criminal in his right mind is going to go to a gun store and allow anyone to check his criminal record. All of their guns are stolen and sold on the black market. “Senator Kennedy’s car has killed more people than my guns. I wonder how such a hypocrite voted? Why penalize the good people with such a silly law?” “By definition criminals commit crimes and law abiding citizens obey laws. What makes anyone think that a criminal will obey the Brady Bill? “Only the law abiding will obey it and even if such a bill had been in effect in ’81 (when Hinckley shot Reagan and Brady) it wouldn’t have had any effect because Hinckley bought his gun months earlier and he had no criminal record precluding the purchase of the weapon. “Brady Bill is a ‘feel good — do nothing’ hindrance to honest people.” The other half of those opposed to the bill felt a need to protect themselves against assault by other individuals and the government itself. “Read page #1, New Braunfels Herald-Zeitung, 11-28-93. If Mr. Waitschies would have to wait five days to get a gun, we would probably have had two murders at Canyon Lake instead of one justifiable shooting.” “It’s hogwash! The avowed goal of certain legislators is to ban “all” guns except for the military and law enforcement They admit that the ‘Brady Bill’ is only a first step. “Anti-gun laws directed at lawful gun owners do nothing to reduce violent crime. The Second Amendment is about the ability of a free people bearing arms to protect themselves from a government grown too oppressive.” “Anyone who actually believes that this bill will have an effect on crime or violence is a fool. “It is just another pathetic example of liberals’ symbolism over substance. They are proudly claiming a great “victory for the people.” What they have done is nothing. They do not comprehend that their social programs and constant attacks on the moral fiber of this great nation are responsible for the chaos in the streets, not guns. “What they will do in a few years when statistics show that the Brady Bill had no affect, will be to cry that it wasn’t enough. Then they will try to ban more guns. And so on, and so on, and so one. And our grandchildren will have no defense from them.” Those who agreed with the passage of the bill felt a five-day waiting period is the least that could be done. “Yes, it is the least that should be done to control guns. Sen. Moyni-han’s proposal to tax ammunition should be next It would help to pay for the new medical plan.” “I am a retired Coast Guard officer, familiar and comfortable with handguns. I, like any rational person, favor all attempts to bring control to the insane, absurd, childlike fascination with guns in this country. “If you can’t wait five days to buy a gun, you’re a nut. Soon we will be like Israeli’s or S. Afrikans — we’ll all be carrying Uzi’s. Now is the time to get a handle on fleas Just because colder weather is on its way doesn't mean your pet is safe from fleas. The problem is that, unless you take strong measures inside your home, a substantial number of these parasites can survive the winter by hiding in your carpets, in your furniture and even in your beds. If even a few fleas are allowed to survive the winter, it can result in a major problem later when warm weather returns. In fact, it is estimated that one flea can produce as many as 8,000 more of the blood thirsty parasites. This is an excellent time to take Taking preventative measures now means fewer parasites in the spring advantage of the many flea control products that are available with insect growth regulators in them. By using these products you will not only kill the adult fleas, but you will also eliminate the possibility of their eggs surviving the winter and becoming a problem in the spring. When you are bringing your pet in the house to shelter him from the cold, remember to use a spray to kill any adult fleas that may enter the house Christa Car Specials GIFT-CERTIFICATES AVAILABLE - GIVE THE GIFT OF SAFETY ■Brake Service "I I • Install economy pads of shoes I | • Turn drums or rotors | | MOST CARS | & LIGHT TRUCKS $4Q95| ;s"WPer axle I ISEMI-METALIC & BEARING I PACKS EXTRA    I I W/ COUPON ONLY - NOT VALID | I WITH ANY OTHER OFFERS. a LIMIT 1 PER CUSTOMER.    I EXP. 12-31-93    " rcTmpSerizTdl I Front End Align I I & Tire Rotation I I Adjust factory adjustable I caster, camber, and toe I angles to $J Aoft | I migs. specs. |    - TRUCKS. 4X4. & DIRECTIONAL ■ | TIRES EXTRA.    | IW/ COUPON ONLY - NOT VALID rn WITH ANY OTHER OFFERS.
