New Braunfels Herald-Zeitung (Newspaper) - September 19, 1993, New Braunfels, Texas Sunday Sept HeraldZeitung 3A The readers speak Give us restaurant reports Responses to last weeks Herald Zeltung survey question about whether or not the newspaper should publish restaurant reports show that readers are in favor of the reports being print Survey results were to 1 in favor of printing the reports Those against publishing the reports said it would be difficult for readers to interpret them Th0se in favor of printing the reports said the public has the right to know the results and that they have often won dered about the cleanliness of area restaurants Fiftyseven readers returned survey forms fortyseven thought the restaurant reports which detail health infractions should be pub lished and 10 thought they should not be published Some survey comments in favor of publishing the reports are as follows P I resent the implication that me the general public are too stupid to interpret the restaurant reports Sim plify if you must but give us the right to any information pertaining to the pro tection of pur health Maybe the reports will encourage the owners to clean up their act Id like also to remind them that a clean restroom is a part of the service the customer pays for A sign for all employees to wash their hands is a joke when there is no tissue no soap or towels its not a comfortable thought for the customer either If the restaurants were clean you would think they would want every person to know it So what are they hiding Mice droppings bugs and filth Ugh Thanks for bring this out in the open I love these reports Please continue publishing these reports Mr Lara is doing us all a favor with his impartial inspections and you are by publishing them Do not give into any pressure from restaurants who advertise in the Zeitung This is one of the best ideas you have ever had and it is a real public service as well and an incentive for the restaurants to do bet ter Most people wouldnt bother to look up the reports but will read them if published in the paper The public has a right to know and publishing should give the restaurants an incentive to overcome the violations Some of the survey comments against publishing the reports are the following I think that the general public does not understand how to interpret the infraction and may not realize that often the infractions as worded on the report sound much worse than they are I feet that this idea of publishing reports is good in theory but not good in reality These reports should be the busi ness of the city and the restaurant The technical portion of this report cannot be of interest to the average citizen Rating system is too subjective too much room for bias Printing such data in the Herald makes for a one sided debate The health inspectors commentary is usually so nonspecific that it leaves too much room for the readers imagination to conjure up neg ative images much stronger than the writer has intended Although I really dont mind the scores being printed I feel the other information is unnecessary and will be misunderstood by the general pub lic I wish the paper would work on some of the positive things about the restaurant industry Also print the problems cited have been solved Often the health inspec tion comes right after lunch when the cleanest restaurant in the world doesnt look its best On the other side I understand Joe Lara has a difficult job and I think he tries to be fair Gruene Music Fest promises family fun The Seventh Annual Gruene Music Fest is set for married in two months Since our father is deceased Kim has asked me to give her lives in a distant state Now my problem I have met my future brotherin law half a dozen times He has always been rather cool toward me although he has been warmer with the rest of my family When I asked Kim about this she explained that she had told John that I was gay which I am and that he strongly disapproves of gays Last weekend I called Kim to discuss some arrangements pertain ing to the wedding and she told me I could arrive the day before the cer emony and indicated that aside from the wedding reception there wouldnt be any other festivities Today I called a cousin who is invited to the wedding to see if he would like to share traveling expenses I told him I was driving out on Thursday two days before the wedding Chuck then asked me why I wasnt going on Monday like everyone else for the family dinner that Johns parents are hosting as well as the bachelors party Well I called Kim and found out that John and his family dont want soineone like me around Kim said she had to wheedle to get them to letme come to the church because his family is very religious and they despise gays He told her that my being at their wedding would be a slap in Gods Never mind that Kim and John have lived together for the past two Abby I love my sister but I feel hurt and now Im not sure I want to lay out the money and time to go where Im not particularly welcome What should I do CONFIRMED BACHELOR DEAR BACHELOR Kim surely knows that your sexuali ty is not a matter of choice She appears to be immature and powerless in the relationship not a very auspicious beginning for a marriage Tell her that you love her and wish her well but you would not feel comfortable attending a wedding where you are not par ticularly welcome DEAR ABBY After years of reading your column I have run into a problem and need some advice I usually choose the largedoor restroom stalls in public buildings because they are roomier and more convenient Recently I was confronted in a loud manner by a man in a wheel chair who scolded me for using the stall which he felt was for the exclusive use of handicapped per sons Never in a million years would I park in a parking space that was reserved for disabled persons but I assumed that restroom stalls were a firstcomefirstserved proposition Most of my coworkers agree with me none of us is disabled What is your opinion PERPLEXED DEAR PERPLEXED An able bodied person should not use a restroom stall intended for one who is disabled If you enter a restroom and the larger stall is available do not use it a dis abled person might come in and have an urgent need for it HYPNOSIS WORKS FOR WEIGHT STOP SMOKING ALSO STUDY SKILLS CONFIDENCE STRESS For More Info Call hink about it I like that Being loose implies Im not bound by the ties that bind Them to Special Interests ince They have said the campaign will be Political being a Cannon lets me take aim on those hings which have created such turmoil for so many of our citizens in their business and personal lives for so ong At this point in my campaign it is and has been my purpose to raise encourage open debate to encourage the citizens of Comal County to ask why certain events do or do not take ilace I have strong faith in the collective wisdom of the American people and want them to be involved in the Jovernment that so affects all our daily lives I have not and will not raise a single issue for which I am not prepared to present a positive resolution I land ready to discuss each of those issues when and 10 our Elected Officials feel confident enough with Their performance in office to allow YOU to hear BOTH SIDES of the issue in OPEN FORUM besides the news to which They appear to have unlimited Some time ago I invited our County Jydge to meet in open discussion about the She declined The invitation remains I am also prepared to discuss in OPEN FORUM answers to the following concerns DEADER SHIP FOR COMAL COUNTY What can we do to provide more and better jobs for our citizens What can our County Judge do to encourage Small Business and to promote Industrial Development for ALL of our County GOVERNMENT OPEN TO THE PEOPLE Why so many appointed rather than elected Boards in our County If a Board is to have Taxing and Ordinance Making Authority over a Citizen shouldnt that citizen have the RIGHT TO VOTE for the Members of the Board which Taxes Him or makes Laws He must obey RESPONSIBLE GOVERNMENT Why do we create Bureaucracies which operate apart from Commissioners Court to Tax our Citizens for services which should rightfully be provided by the County Where are the People to go for redress if these Bureaucracies dont fulfill Their commitments PROVIDING A FUTURE FOR OUR YOUTH In a County so rich in both Environmental and Human Resources why are we more concerned with the future of our Rivers than of our Children Shouldnt we have occupational and technical training for the Kids in our County which would prepare Them to make a living in the adult world WATER FOR OUR COUNTY This is not an issue for next year nor for the next Why must we continually appoint committees to rehash the solution proposed by the previous committee Why cant we make a decision and move ahead Perhaps our County Judge would feel more comfortable meeting in an open discussion of one or all of these concerns If so the invitation is open I am sure the voters would like to hear our positions on these matters To FINALLY give the people the opportunicy to hear BOTH SIDES of the Issues would be a real step forward or Comal County Its YOUR Home Its YOUR County Its YOUR Future TED KEY CANDIDATE FOR COUNTY JUDGE political ad paid for by Ted Key Did you know There
