river clean up up By ROSE MARIE EASH Staff Writer It was everything it was previously billed to be and more Friends For Rivers annual volun teer river cleanup saw 700 volun teers including river outfitters gov ernment officials local civic organi zations San Antonio neighbors vol unteers from across the state and even late vacationers working together to clean up the Guadalupe River after the summer season The project was climaxed by a spe cial ceremony held at the end of the day at Rockin R river outfitters where several local and state officials spoke The volunteerism and esprit de corps that many of us had today as we trounced around the river picking up cans was said State Rep Edmund Kuempel It was an enlight ening day We were out for abou three and half hours this morning and it was an experience We have what should be a very pristine part of the river and a very pristine part of Texas here on the Guadalupe River flowing through Comal County but people tend to for get and we hope this will help educate them about the ecology and about keeping the river clean for the future It was a very enjoyable day because a lot of good people that put in a lot of hard hours of work The cleanup was from 9 to 5 RockinR River Outfitters in Gruene donated their place of business for an evening celebration and many other river outfitters provided boats and equipment for the cleanup I was at the site at Rockin R and we got 248 plus people not including the people who just snowed up and didnt know anything about the river cleanup but saw our booth came over and asked questions and went out with their tubes and a WORD net trash bag and wanted to be a part of said Dierdre Hisler Guadalupe State Park Ranger It wasnt just community organi zations and environmentally correct organizations these were people who play on this river I want to say that Donna Murphy has been incredible She is so devoted to cleaning up the river I think she deserves some recog nition for pulling all these people outfitters Friends for Rivers WORD the General Land Office We had a group of nurses fiom Brooks we had divers from San Anto nio we had scouts and we had fami lies Thats so important until we edu cate everyone taxes up by 11 From staff reports Figures released by the City of New Braunfels indicated that the occupancy tax figures for the second quarter of 1993 are significantly up percent over 1992 figures This marks the 19th consecutive quarter of increas es We are extremely pleased with this doubledigit increase when you consider the highest occupancy levels in our hotels and motels occur during the second and third quarters Therefore they are the most difficult periods in which to show an increase after a recordsetting said Jim Scheele Jr Director of the Convention Visitors Bureau of the Greater New Braunfels Chamber of Com merce A recent study compiled by PFK Consulting Hospitality Advisory Services showed that New Braunfels had the highest occupancy levels in the month of July compared to all Texas markets In fact the New Marcos area had a percent occupancy compared to second place San Antonio which had percent and third place Arlington with percent New Braunfels has always been a strong market during the summer months and this survey proves that stat ed Scheele The New Braunfels Chamber of Commerce Conven tion Visitors Bureau ran a Spring and Summer Ad Cam paign for 26 weeks starting in February which brought inquiries This is a 39 percent increase over 1992 Spring Ad Campaign stated Scheele Of course there are many other factors that have helped the tourist season such as good weather and strong advertising campaigns by the visitor To date the Chamber has received a total of con tacts which represent a 26 percent increase over 1992 fig ures We are still reaching strong markets in the Worth area as well as the Houston market and increasing our presence in the international markets of said Scheele AT A Top July Hotel Texas cities with
