Sept 11 as Guadalupe River Day Friends For Rivers will hold its annual volunteer river clean up on the first Saturday after Labor Day Friends For Rivers was created with the pur pose of preserving and conserving the Guadalupe River a precious natural resource which is part of our great states heritage and said Richards should be encouraged to volunteer their time to join the community cleanup effort ensuring that this Texas river will remain healthy forever Richards said it was crucial that Texas rivers begin to be protected since many are falling vic tim to environmental hazards Texas rivers represent one of our most vital natural resources providing the slate with a means of commerce and transportation energy and recre she said However these rivers are threatened by pol lution and misuse and it is essential for their sur vival that the people of Texas become actively involved in understanding their fragility and con tributing to their Cleanup coordinator Donna Murphy has called for volunteers to help cleanup both on land and in the water Friends For Rivers would also like to have some divers to help and can use donations if cit izens cannot offer manpower help The cleanup Injury but the car suffered extensive damage Recent drugrelated arrests place New By JENNIFER ROMPEL Staff Writer Five New Braunfels residents have been arrest ed over the past three days on drugrelated charges in three separate cases New Braunfels police officers made two arrests Monday at 343 S Academy Street New Braun fels residents Jennifer Bergmann 24 and Lynn Cannon 22 were arrested and charged with pos session of marijuana under two ounces Both were taken to the Comal County Jail and have been released on bond According to reports the arrest was made at Capt Ray Douglas of NBPD said six to seven officers were on hand to make the arrests We had been working on the case for awhile It all came together and we decided it was a good said Douglas Three drugrelated arrests were made this weekend by Comal County Sheriffs deputies According to reports Joel Campos Torres 39 and Esperanza Hernandez 32 both of New Braunfels were arrested at Saturday The arrest was made at 1985 W San Antonio in New Braunfels Both were charged with possession of a con trolled substance namely cocaine in an amount less than 28 grams Reports show more than 18 grams of cocaine was found in the apartment Deputies also seized and a 1982 Chevrolet pickup Precinct 4 Justice of the Peace Howard Smith set bond in each case at Hernandez paid her bond and has been released Torres is being held in the Comal County Jail Sheriff Jack Bremer said the arrest was the result of a longterm investigation by his depart ment S A man shot by 2 teens By JENNIFER ROMPEL Staff Writer A San Antonio man is in guarded condition today after a shooting that occurred at Tuesday on the 1800 block of West San RuldolphTrevino of San Antonio was allegedly shot four times by two San Antonio two Arthur Gallegos 18 and Gerardo Galvan 17 were arrested by San Antonio police officers The pair has been charged with aggravated robbery and is currently being held in the Bexar County Jail on million bond each New Braun fels police plan to obtain a warrant on the men for attempted capital mur der and will transfer them to the Comal County Jail According to Capt Ray Douglas of the NBPD the two men allegedly pointed a 380 caliber gun at Trevino while he was using a pay phone and demanded his wallet Reports show the victim complied however an argument ensued suspects shot Trevino Douglas said the two men then allegedly took Trevinos car and fled on Interstate Highway 35 to San Anto nio Trevino was shot in the upper torso abdomen and once in each arm He was undergoing surgery this morn ing at Medical Center Hospital in San Antonio residents in jail Another arrest was made at 11 Saturday at 393 S Comal Street in New Braunfels Elizabeth Ortiz 29 was arrested for possession of a controlled substance namely marijuana in an amount over 4 ounces and under five pounds Bremer said the suspect was allegedly found to be in possession of one and a half pounds of marijuana Bond has been set at Ortiz is being years and is a 33 year veteran of the newspaper busi ness Lyon said that Tackett brings with him valuable experience with a strong background in editing Hes got a proven track record in news writing and editing and is well versed in the operations of a news Lyon said Were excited hes here with the Tackett a graduate of the Univer sity of Texas has worked as copy editor for the Fort Worth Star Telegram Perspective editor for the San Antonio ExpressNews and was a staff writer with the San Anto nio Light He has also served as Associate Director of Public Relations at South em Methodist
