continued growth in singlefamily homes and profes sional buildings Single family building permits issued in May 1993 are percent higher than those issued in May 1992 Permits issued are up from 13 to 16 compared to last year In addition yeartodate figures show an increase of percent in singlefamily permits This is up from 55 during this time last year to 71 this year New Braunfels Chamber of Com merce Executive Vice President Michael Meek said this increase is significant especially since the number of permits in the county has doubled Comal County permits for single family dwellings have increased from 81 to 177 year to date an increase of percent Yeartodate permits have increased from 81 to 177 and increase of percent The benefits of the growth are var ied according to Meek It give use increased tax revenue and more dollars will come into the community and be circulated he said Meek said this is not necessarily unique to this area but New Braunfels numbers are much high than the Department responded to a drowning report at approximately 4 Friday afternoon at the 2nd crossing on the Guadalupe River Amle Robinson a 17yearold female tuber from Longvlew Texas was under water for approximately five minutes was resucltated by bystanders near the river and later taken via AlrLlfe to a San Antonio hospital where she was treated and released floblnson recovered and even came by the HeraldZeitung off tee Saturday night asking for a copy of this New Braunfels youth arrested in connection with Saturday morning fire at NOW facility By JENNIFER ROMPEL Staff Writer A 17yearold New Braunfels resident was arrest ed and charged with arson Saturday morning in con nection with a fire that occurred at the New Oppor tunities and Ways School Reynaldo Diaz a resident at the facility was arrested at approximately Saturday He is being held at the Comal County Jail on bond The school is located at 2250 Business Loop 35 in New Braunfels Firefighters were called to the scene at approximately Saturday According to New Braunfels Fire Marshal John Herber the fire was confined to the bottom floor in one bedroom and a laundry room Herber said the investigation is still in the pre liminary stages and he is not sure at this time what type of material was used to start the fire The fire was set during the course of a civil dis turbance say officials Herber said there was still some unrest at the facility when firefighters arrived No injuries were reported to residents However one firefighter was slightly injured while extin guishing the blaze but is reported to be fine at this time Diaz was arraigned this morning by Justice of the Peace David Perkins The New Opportunities and Ways school is a edu cational facility and residential halfway house for males Drowning investigation continues at Canyon Lake By JENNIFER ROMPEL Staff Writer An investigation into the possible drowning of a Florida man at Canyon Lake is ongoing according to deputies at the Comal County Sheriffs Office Gregory Roland Samsel of West Palm Beach disappeared last Sat urday while he was swimming in the lake According to Chief Deputy Elwood Hoherz deputies are still watching the surface to see if Samsels body rises Reports show Samsel was at Comal Park with friends last weekend and was reported missing by friends on Sunday He was last seen at 9 Saturday Deputies conducted a diving search on Monday and Sunday The search ended Monday afternoon The search was ended because divers were having a difficult time seeing in the water because of trot lines According to reports there are no witnesses who can say whether or not Samsel actually entered the water Deputies say Samsel and his girl friend were staying at the parkr Reports show Samsels friend and girlfriend spent the night
