New Braunfels Herald Zeitung (Newspaper) - April 29, 1993, New Braunfels, Texas Fund drive continues seeking $250,000 goal By GARY P. CARROLL Htrald-Zaltung The Capital Campaign Fund Drive to raise money for a new and larger women's shelter is off and running Following the completion of the Leadership Committee's efforts the campaign is $72,000 closer to its $250,000 goal. The Capital Campaign is an effort by community members to increase the level of service and protection provided to women who are victims of violent crime, and the money will be spent purchasing and building a new shelter. The current facility can house only a total of ll women and children which, according to Comal County Women’s Shelter Executive Director Cindy Stauffer, is too small. The new facility will be able to house up to 24 people, and also will provide peer group counseling and professional refer rals for the residents. Co-Chairperson for the Capital Campaign Rita Kaufmann said the committee is currently searching for a place to build the shelter, and one site in particular has been found. “We do have a site in mind which is in close proximity to the courthouse," Kaufmann said. “This is good because a lot of women need to be able to get to and from the courthouse." Kaufmann said the lot should be purchased by mid-May and following negotiations with a local contractor, construction should follow soon after as long as the money is there. The fund-raising continues with the Guardian Committee ($60,000 goal), the Friends Committee ($30,000 goal), and the Board of Directors Committee which bas already met its $10,000 goal. Stauffer, 620-7520 or Kaufmann, 625-7541, may be contacted for more information.Kindermaskenball These children prepare for the Kindermaskenball activities planned for this weekend during Folkfest activities.
