New Braunfels Herald Zeitung (Newspaper) - April 4, 1993, New Braunfels, Texas FBI says threatening letters probably from church typewriter Associated Press SAN ANTONIO - Threatening let-ten tent to a former Dallae minister accused of trying to kill his wife apparently came from a typewriter at the preacher's church, an FBI agent testified Friday. And a police officer told jurors that Walker Railey and his lover met privately in a Dallas hospital room while Raile/s wife lay unconscious and near death in a room nearby. The letters and the love affair are two of the critical elements in the state’s case against Railey, 45, on trial for the nearstrangulation six years ago of his wife, Peggy. Railey says he was researching a book at the time of the assault State attorneys maintain the letters were part of a complex scheme by Railey to dispose of his wife, abandon his children and run off with Dallas psychologist Lucy Papillon. Mrs. Railey, then 38, survived hut suffered irreversible brain damage. Prosecutors wrapped up the second week of the trial Friday with testimony from Agent Thomas Dewan of the FBI’s laboratory document section in Washington, D.C. Dewan, who conducted extensive tests on the IBM Selective, told the jury there is a "high degree of likelihood” several of the six letters were prepared on a typewriter recovered from a third-floor office at First United Methodist Church in Dallas.' However, on cross-examination, Dewan conceded he could not swear beyond a reasonable doubt the letters were written on the church typewriter. At the time, Railey was senior pastor at First United and one of the denomination's brightest stars. Although not as definitive as the state wanted, Dewan's testimony dovetailed with information provided jurors earlier from the Rev. Jim Reaves, an associate pastor at First Methodist T he typewriter in question was recovered from his office. Reaves was the first to suspect the letters might have been prepared on the church typewriter and that Railey could be the author. Portions of the letters, littered with profanities, threats, misspellings and errors, were read to the jury. All were addressed to Ridley and the first was received March 24 at the church. A letter postmarked April 17 was mailed to Ridley's home. The sixth and final letter was slipped under a church office door on Easter Sunday, and Railey delivered his sermon that morning wearing a bulletproof vest beneath his robe.Dinner set to honor CISD superintendent Three long-time friends of Comal Independent School District Superintendent Joe Rogers have announced plans fbr an appreciation dinner in his honor. Rogers will leave the superintendency at the end of the current school year to become principal of 8mithson Valley Hi|fr School. Set for April 22 in the New Braunfels Civic Center, 380 S. Seguin St, the dinner will get under way at 7 p.m. The event will be catered by Librado's restaurant. Tickets, which go on sale Monday, are $10 each and are available at a variety of outlets including Rivercrest Drive-In, Librado’s and the Herald-Zeitung. The trio organising the dinner includes J.C. Reagan, who says he had youngsters who played in school bands directed by Rogers, and whose wife taught in schools where he was the principal; Joe Alvarado, who knew Rogers in Kingsville before they both came to New Braunfels, and who was recommended by Rogers; and Darvin Altenhoff, who was principal at Frazier Elementary School when Rogers was principal at Smithson Valley High School. Fields, tax group protest Hutchison ad Associated Press AUSTIN — A fellow Republican and an anti-tax group Friday called on U.S. Senate candidate Key Bailey Hutchison to stop advertising that she was the “only elected official* to fight a state income tax. U.S. Rep. Jack Fields, also a Senate candidate, and Richard Ford of the Dallas-based Texans Against State Income Taxes both called Mrs. Hutchison’s television commercial misleading. Ford acknowledged that Mrs. Hutchison, the state treasurer, was a leader in opposing an income tax proposal in 1991. But he said her TV commercial is “a disservice to the dozens of Democrats and Republicans in the Texas Legislature who have supported our efforts." Responding, campaign spokesman David Beckwith said Mrs. Hutchison does credit those lawmakers who oppose an income tax. instead of carrying the Democrats' water, Mr. Fields ought to be inquiring where (interim Sen.) Bob Krueger was while Key Hutchison was fighting the income tax ... For that matter, where was Jack Fields?” Beckwith said. Fields said given the error in her commercial, Mrs. Hutchison "ought to do the right thing and pi ll the misleading ad and return to the basic rules of truth in advertising.” Krueger, a Democrat appointed to the seat vacated by U.S. Treasury Secretary Lloyd Ben teen, said numerous state officials opposed a state income tax after Lt. Gov. Bob Bullock in 1991 advocated one as part of a tax overhaul Three charged in city burglaryTeens arrested by city police officers By GABY P.
