New Braunfels Herald Zeitung (Newspaper) - March 10, 1993, New Braunfels, Texas 6-A HERALD-ZEITUNG WEDNESDAY, MARCH IO, 1003 Comal Habitat looks to build homes in area By GARY P. CARROLL Herald-Zeltung Habitat for Humanity is a viable organization in Comal County, and hopes to begin ' building its first house by the summer of 1993, Janet Brandt, 1 chairperson of the group's pub-~ lie relations and fundraising committee said. Habitat for Humanity is a non-profit, ecumenical organization established in 1976 to provide safe, quality housing for families living in dilapidated or poverty level structures. The Comal County Chapter . of the Guadalupe Valley Affiliate for Habitat, received its filii ; charter in January of this year, and plans were put into motion to begin building houses. Although all of the paper-. work has yet to be completed , for Habitat to begin building, .'Brandt said committees are • hard at work raising money ’’and recruiting volunteers so '.'that when the paperwork is s'complete, they will be ready to *;begin. % "Right now we can't own ’property until the final paperwork is processed, but once that is done, we can take donations of lots, or if someone has property with an old house we can take that and renovate the house,” Brandt said. Renovations could end up costing more than building a new house, but Brandt said it was always an option. Habitat seeks involvement • from all groups and organizations that want to help, and ' Brandt said that Habitat is not Lhjust limited to church groups, Ubut any group that wants to .rget involved is always wel-corned. Brar.dt said Habitat utilizes * its speakers bureau to inform /regroups about the organization. ’ Any groups interested in receiving more information Xfrom the speakers bureau 'kabout Habitat or in how to become involved with the organization may call Vivian Nuhn at 625-7006, or Janet Brandt at 625-4482. Habitat's next meeting will be Thursday, April I, at a location to be announced later.
