KENNY WOOD You meet a different class of people in the urologist office. The place was nearly packed first thing in the morning. I must of eavesdropped on a dozen different conversations. There was a doctor there. A surgeon, if I had to guess. Maybe 65. His best friend brought him. I never quite got it straight whether his wife was living or not. His friend stayed with him during the whole wait (three boun.) He was waiting for the results of a blood test. You didn’t have to be a rocket scientist to tell it was very serious. Not just from his face, you could tell because his friend had not let him come alone. The doctor had beautiful hands. His fingers were long and perfect. No rings. He had the hands of an artist. Who knows what miracles they had performed over the'years. They talked mostly about the past. About brothers and sisters gone now. About the holidays of years past; of tables heavy with food and the sounds of children. They didn’t seem sad just wistful. And maybe wishful. There were seven married couples there. None under 60. Wives helped their husbands in and out of their chairs. And when the nurse called the man's name not one wife said, “That's you.” They leaned in and whispered, “That's us.” And when the two of them came out of the office she touched his arm and asked, “Do you want me to drive?” He couldn’t drive anymore it was obvious. But she asked him. I saw how these women honored these men that they had seen through most every stage of life. I brought a book with me but I didn't read a paragraph. I looked around the room, I listened. So much love and respect. So much history in that room. I felt like going over to the doctor and thanking him for all he had given. I felt like standing up and saying something to everyone in the place. They were there because they hurt. But they didn’t whine. They smiled and laughed. They shared old times with each other. They took turns holding each other up. I did go over and thank the doctor. I did a pretty clumsy job of it but he understood. Next week when we sit down to thank God for the blessings of this past year. Think about the women and men whose quiet love and strength have seen us through the crazy and hard stages of our lives. The Rev. Kenny Wood it pastor of Covenant Baptist Church, which meets in the Duck Blind Lounge at Forest Waters Country Chib.
