Coach Noel Hansen From a time she could be some where in the top 10 or She could also have a great day and surprise Cook also believes she can improve her time and place at and has set specific goals to that I want to get into the top she In thats a good goal for I might be able to get into the top She said it could be a difference of just several seconds between a top 10 and top 15 There really wasnt that much of a difference between the she Hopefully Ill have a better race than I did last Hansen said among the favorites in the race should be two of three trip the from Houston Cypress along with Region IV champion Marina Flores of Edinburg The Unicom team just missed accompanying Cook to placing fourth by four points behind the third place qualifier at Thats the way cross country Cook But were a young and we learned from New Braunfels Amy Cook will compete in her third state cross country meet with the Unicorn junior scheduled to run in the 5A race at at Southwestern University in Next our goal from the begin ning will be to go to She said the younger runners will at least have a chance to see the state meet for themselves this Theyre going to all go to the state she That theyll know what its like instead of just hearing about Hansen said that knowledge bene fited being prepared for things such as the big crowd for the 5 A I think shes a lot more ready this he Cook experiences In the past several While Lee clinched Its first playoff berth In 12 New Braunfels won Its third consecutive district tide and to playoffbound tor the ninth lime In 10 Lee prevented New Braunfels from meeting former coach Jim Streety and his Madi son team In the first round when the Volunteers lost to Madtoon last week In a game that determined 265As secondplace team behind Converse The two schools are competing In the Division II Small School 5A playoffs and are both the smallest playoff qualifiers In their respective has more than students while New Braunfels has fewer than The Unicorns are the smallest school in District 255A and the smallest 5A in the area except for Sam which has 4A numbers but plays despite being a small school has a few hundred more kids than 255As largest school New Braunfels situation could be however 255A runnerup McCollum laces Judson for the second year In a with the Rockets having almost more students to draw from than the The winner of the New Braunfels Lee contest could run Into a brick wall in the sec ond round of the playofls the Wdlstrlct survivor gets the dubious honor of playing the Sam Houston Marshall That game Is Friday at at Alamo and It should be the best of the areas bidfetrict It pits the two premier 5A running backs In the area In Hous tons Vincent Yates and Marshalls Anthony with the latter returning from an Injury that probably cost him a state rushing It Is unusual for New Braunfels to have a Saturday afternoon but Coach Lew Simmonds said the Unicorns are such a good practice team that he believes they will perform well at a time of day when they are accustomed to being Lee was guided to the playoffs by firstyear coach Jimmy a member of the Volunteers 1971 state championship Tommy Kramer was the quarterback of that going on to a stellar pro career as a Minnesota The Volunteer players have used that team as an inspiration on the 20th anniversary of the with star quarterback Matt Lynch wearing Kramers Loos altitude going into the playoffs should be dramatically different than the Madison team New Braunfels faced last After entering the playoffs with a 451 a San Antonio newspaper column said the Mavericks were a prime example of why the threeteam 5A playoff system diluted the quality of the A solid Madison team answered by going three rounds In the rouUng New Braunfels and advancing in a tie with Sam on the other has been celebrated as a Cinderella team all season because of its rallies and unforeseen success the 05 in 265A in were uni formly picked to repeat as the cellar Lees tour losses are all to hkji i quality playoff teams Taft and Mar The Volunteers have also defeated two playoff teams in East Central and Players to watch Lees Matt Lynch is the secondrated 5A quarterback in San Anto behind the Holmes quarterback and probably the third best overall behind Alamo HeightsGlenn He is probably the best quarterback New Braunfels has faced at least since before district as the Unicorns played some good ones early in Pflugerviltes Peter Brand and Del Valles Eric Lynch has thrown for yards and rushed tor Lynchs favorite target is wide out Danny who is very effective as a possession Mota was the leading receiver in 265A with 33 but he averaged just total The Volunteers have a big tailback in Richard who has rushed tor more than yards and can hurt teams that play the pass too Lynch is also a major threat against defenses that spread out too much to stop the teams best play is an option run in that The skill players operate behind a huge and talented offensive Tackle Jason Sands is an exceptional player at 65 and he is also very Center James Moreno is also a very capable offensive lineman for the best players are the front people specifically the interior linemen and two inside The TNT provides a tot of impact up with nose guard James Osbome weighing 215 and tackles Joey Cuellar and Kenneth Kirksey respectively tipping the scales at 215 and At Mike Heldt is a big kid at 511 and white his opposite Ben is also Heldt is an aggressive player who reads offenses New Braunlels top player in the last several games has been Dennis who scored on a Michael Sierra pass and a punt return last Bryan weighs about 140 but has been the impact player for the Unicorns as a ttireeway player on defense and special Jacob Leos has done an outstanding job of rushing since Kyle Hermans ankle injury Leos averaged right at 100 yards per game late in the New Braunfels inside linebackers have also been extremely consistent players Jason Turner and Shawn Juries have both had remarkable seasons and have made a great deal of The team has also enjoyed outstanding play from Its offensive Ine of with David Matt Pusateri and Todd Kading having very strong district Unicorns finished with ready to compete ByJOEBELK Sports Editor After learning about District 255 A basket ball the hard way last season with a short and inexperienced New Braunfels now has the advantage of reluming a lot of players familiar with the tough We took our lumps last but it paid dividends as far as maturity and knowing what to Unicom Coach Cliff Wilk ins Well still be liny theres nothing we can do about that except play even harder as a We have a chance to be real good by the We should be able to com pete a lot The Unicorns return three starters and five additional leuermen who played on the varsi ty for all or much of the Wilkins said thai while the team played hard last this season he believes the Uni corns will be more conscious of setting their own tempo rather than reacting to other Last we would play great against a great team and not so well against a team closer to our We never really estab lished a he I think well be able to develop our own personality and play within our own style this We want to develop our own tempo and have other teams be conscious of us rather than vice Because of our were going to have some But were developing a lot more composure each and every In addition to the eight New Braunfels has several talented players moving up from the junior I feel like weve got the program in the best shape its been in in a long Wilk ins Were solid from the freshman level on If we dp have a real strength on it would be with He said the returning varsity players ami the ones just starting on the varsity have all made great strides during the Schedule New Braunfels Boys Basketball Heights Alamo South San East 255A to looks just so much bet ter than they Wilkins I really feel comfortable with this We have a lot of We played our first year in 5A age a JV and we took our he We had some kids that did good jobs It seems like we have developed a lot more Wilkins said that consistency at a high level will be needed in District which is extremely strong this year despite losing at least five college Even though we were young last a lot of oilier teams were almost as he South San is the projected with the Bobcats reluming all of their players after a rebuilding year last The only team with no returning starters is Easl a regional finalist lasl year and ihc dislricts only true perennial powerhouse with one of ihc strongest programs in San Their program is such where each year they primarily have a senior ball even though ihey have three sophomores on varsity this Wilkins Everyone says theyll be I look for them lo be real good by the end theyre so quick and which won the district lasl year after tying East Central and winning a playoff lost six of its lop players bul slill has ihree very sirong people reluming Rodney James Medrano and Marcelino Our district may noi be quite as sirong as far as ihe firsi two Wilkins after both 255A teams won bidistricl lasl year and were eveniually eliminated by siale finalist Whoever wins may not be quite as good as Seguin was last or as good as Easl Ceniral But the districl will be better all San Marcos returns several good including 68 Chris McCollum brings back 66 Dellon and Harlandale returns three By what everyones reluming roster South San would have to be the Easl Ceniral will probably be ihe mosi aihle and San Marcos has ihe besi big man so you cant ever count them Wilkins We know its going to be extremely difficult Bul ai ihe same we know mats whal we play ihe preseason The lype of teams were playing will prepare us for our New Braunfels has numerous playoff teams on its preseason including 4A state finalist Alamo West wood and Austin Among the Unicorns returning starters is Isabell a 510 player who will move from guard to wing this year but could play any of the outside positions in a Bell had a tendency to play a little oul of bul this year he seems to have deve loped the maturily necessary to be consis Wilkins Hes probably the quickest player we Bell should DP a real fine John another returning plays in the low post but is exlremely He could probably play any number of positions for the coach said of a He always goes 110 Every body hates to practice against John because he is so Hes the most aggressive player on the learn and probably in ihe Hes noi a tremendous athlete by any but he hustles and plays with such intcnsily thai hes invaluable to our Unicorns 1991 92 This Is the roster tor the 190182 New Braunlels Unicorns boys baskefcall with Isabel AndyCaldwell John 1L Kevin Reagan Lance James Michael Duslin Dean The other reluming siarier is sophomore Michael who played point guard as a Having Mike out there is like having a coach on the He always plays under Wilkins He was put into a position last year thai noi many 14 or 15 year olds are put and he responded with a tre mendous amount of poise and He really improved during the offseason and He does the little things to win you ball games and keep you in ball And he loves I look forward to him having an outstanding Another returning senior is Kevin who will play more on the wing this year after seeing most of his time inside last He should be a solid performer for us off the bench hell give us muchneeded Wilkins said of who he said had improved his outside shooting and is working to improve off the The teams third senior is 62 Lance who can play either inside position and was one of the leading scorers on the JV last Another returner is Reagan who will miss the first few weeks of the season after recent arthroscopic Overall can play either guard position Hes always been and is even more so now a great threepoint Wilkins And hes developed into a good Dustin Simons returns this season after being moved up to varsity lasl Wilkins said he gives the team a lot of strength and aggressiveness down Brad Lybrand is another junior who played on both the JV and varsity last Lybrand is one of the best athletes on the and has improved his shot since last One of the teams point guards is junior Andy who also split time between the JV and varsity last He does a good job of running our Wilkins adding that Caldwell is a capable shooter and He has improved his allaround He will defi nitely see lois of James Sargent moves up from the giv ing the varsity a good athlete who runs the floor He really comes to play on game Wilkins James is another one who real ly needs court time that ought to allow him to play a little more under 10
