New Braunfels Herald Zeitung (Newspaper) - October 18, 1991, New Braunfels, Texas Page 8AReligious Focus Herald-Ze/fci/10, New Braunfels, Texas Friday, October 18, 1991Chance meetings Stay sick or get well I use to think that everybody who is sick wants to get well. I don't think that anymore. Some people want to stay sick. Do you rcmem-l ber the story of the man who had been paralized most of his life? Everyday someone carried him to the edge of a pool in downtown Jerusalem. It I was one of the few Wood fresh water spots within the city limns. Whenever the water bubbled up the townspeople said that an angel had come and “troubled” the waters. And the first person into the pool would be healed. This man had been trying to get in first for 38 years, but someone always beat him to it. One day Jesus was in Jerusalem for some Festival. Instead of going to the temple, he went instead to a place where people would admit they needed help — the pool. He bent down to the man and asked, “Do you want to be healed?” In other words, do you want to stay sick or get well. The first few times I read this story (Luke 19) I was surprised that Jesus would ask such a naive question. Who doesn’t want to be well. Every sick person wants to be well. Now I know better. There are advantages to staying sick. Especially if you could be well. You get great attention; sympathy; and besides, if you arc sick you don’t have to accept a lot of responsibility. Everything can be blamed on being sick. Jesus knew this. That’s why the first thing he did when he saw this man was to ask, “Do you want to be healed. If that willingness is not there no amount of help from anyone will be enough. But if that willingness is there the possibilities are endless. The man wanted to be well and as Jesus reached out to him and lifted him up to his feet strength shot through his feet an md legs and he stood up. Then he picked up the palette he had spent his life on, and walked away carrying his own weight. Which is it for you? Stay sick or get well? The Rev. Kenny Wood it pastor of Covenant Baptist Church, which meets in the Duck Blind lounge at Forest Waters Country Club.
