The awareness week focuses on the fact that in public power communities, such as New Braunfels, the owners and users of electric service are the same people. New Braunfels is one of more than 2,000 publicly owned electric utilities in the United States in cities and town in every state expect Hawaii. “Public Power Week is a celebration of the fact that our utility company is owned by the customers that it serves,” said Jim Ruppel, NBU resource manager. “Because we are a public utility, every dollar we produce goes back into the system toward better service and equipment. Private utilities have to make a profit to pay their stockholders.” NBU has a special afternoon of activities scheduled from 1:30 to 3:30 Friday, Oct. ll, at NBU’s office on Main Plaza. After a short welcome, a demonstration of the Safe Haven program will be given. Safe Haven is an awareness program for children teaching them to go to any NBU worker when they find themselves in a dangerous situation and need help. An arcing-safety demonstration will follow at 2 p.m. The demonstration, described as 7,200 volts of a loud, bright buzz, is designed to raise awareness about the dangers of working around power lines. At 2:45, the afternoon will end with an air-change test at an older NBU- I ll) s. s,i n Advancing shares outnumbered decliners by about 6 lo 5 on the NYSE, with 572 up, 484 down and 556 unchanged.
