New Braunfels Herald Zeitung (Newspaper) - August 23, 1991, New Braunfels, Texas Religious Focus Friday, August 23, 1991 ■ Herald-Ze/fung, New Braunfels, Texas Page 5 ....... 9 Chance meetings    Religion    Briefs Starting school Mary Lee Murrell is congratuled on her award received through her work at Eden Home by administrator Rodney Wells. related to the United Church of Christ I was the first child to leave home and go to school. It’s easy to remember the morning. Woodlawn Hills Elementary was close enough so I could walk. My mother packed my lunch in a paper bag. What I had for lunch most days was weird; but I still have it sometimes. '    Peanut butter toast. My mother .    would butter the four comers of the *.    bread, lay them •    out on a cookie ,    sheet, turn the oven on “broil” •    and then make .    toast. Brown Wood around the edges, but mushcy where the butter is. For lunch she would take the left over toast (two) and spread peanut butter (crunchy) and put it in a plastic bag. By lunch it was perfect. It’s funny how you can grow attached to certain tastes. Now when I have peanut butter toast I make the . toast, put it in the freezer for IO minutes then leave it out on the counter for another IO and then spread the peanut butter. It’s pretty much the same taste and texture as I remember it. Sorta stale and chewy (I told you it was weird) I remember leaving home that first morning. My mother stood at the front door until I was around the comer at the end of the block. We must have waved 30 times. I was happy to go, and she was sad. She knew things would never be the same. She was right. It’s not that they got bad it’s just that now I had another world. More than anyone my mother gave me a sense of self importance. I especially remember how she was when I got home from school. Always glad to see me. Waiting for me. She con-‘tinued to wait up for me even through high school, though I mostly wished she wouldn’t. Myron Madden says that “There is nothing more creative to the formation of a postive self-image than to have someone sparkle on you.” To see a twinkle in someone’s eye when you come in the room! God feels that for us. In Ephesians, it says “You are God’s workmanship” (2; IO). The word for workmanship in Greek is “Poiema” it might be a better translation to say “You are God’s poem because that’s what it says.” That means there is rhyme and rhythm to your life. It means God sparkles on you. The Rev. Kenny Wood is pastor of Covenant Baptist Church, which meets in the Duck Blind Lounge at Forest Waters Country Chib.Adult Bible school The public is invited to register for classes at The School of the Local Church this fall. It is said that 21 settlers from the area petitioned their bishop in 1896 for a church of their own. He head their plea and permitted establishment of a mission church in what is now the community of Selma. These settlers banded together to build a small church and school, with the schoo opening in 1901. The First teachers were Sisters of the Divine Providence. Then, in 1939, teaching duties were assumed by another order, Sisters of the Incarnate Word and Blessed Sacrament. “The school and parish are grateful to these dedicated siters and lay leachers for their role in building the school to its present state of academic and spiritual excellence,” said reunion organizer Freeda Lapos-Massey. The structure, too, has seen much change — but tradition remains with the cross from the original building now mounted on the current red brick building. The birthday celebration is set for Sept. 15. Organizers now are seeking former students so they may be invited to participate. Former students or those with names, addresses or phone numbers of former students arc encouraged to contact the Celebration Committee through the parish office, (512)651-6913.Fish fry CANYON LAKE — Hill Country Bible Church of Canyon Lake will host its annual Fish fry from 5 to 8:30 p.m. Aug. 31 on Farm-to-Markct Road 306 at the Tamarack Shores Subdivision HOFFMANN FLOORS 710 Loop 337 Kit ward I).
