New Braunfels Herald Zeitung (Newspaper) - August 23, 1991, New Braunfels, Texas Page IO    Hera\frZeltvng, New Braunfels, Texas    Friday,    August    23,    1991 Chinese art exhibited TLC SEGUIN — An exhibit of traditional Chinese calligraphies and paintings has opened at Texas Lutheran College. The display, consisting of 16 calligraphies and 44 paintings, will be housed in the college’s Blum-berg Library through Sept. 15. Exhibit hours will be 8 ajn. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday (until IO p.m. on Wednesdays) through Aug. 27. Beginning Aug. 28, the exhibit will be open from 8 a.m. to IO p.m. Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturdays and I to IO p.m. Sundays. This exhibit of traditional Chinese calligraphy and paintings has been selected by the National Museum of History of the Republic of China and is sponsored by the International Council on Education for Teaching, located in the United States. The exhibit is one of several events in the celebration of the centennial of Texas Lutheran College. Chinese calligraphy, painting and literature have a tradition of several millennia and are the most distinguished of China’s lasting contributions to world art and culture. Today, Chinese artists face the task of safeguarding this cultural heritage while at the same time striving to find an appropriate means to express their own modem spirit and individual creativity. The purpose of this exhibit is to introduce to the American public, through universities and colleges and around the country, many of the most famous and accomplished of contemporary calligraphers and painters practicing in Taiwan today. Due to the large number of American universities and colleges, the exhibit has been organized into three equal groups, which are being shown simultaneously in different parts of the country. Each group of works contains 16 calligraphies and 44 paintings by 60 different artists, though some of the artist have works appearing in more than one group. Of the total 180 works on tour in the United States, there are 48 calligraphies by 30 different artists, and 132 paintings by 89 different artists. Aside from the great diversity in subject matter and individual style, these works represent most of the major current trends in traditional Chinese painting and calligraphy. The works in calligraphy cover a wide range of script types, but concentrate primarily on popular standard, running (or semi-cursive), and cursive scripts, with one or two examples of seal and clerical script. The personal styles of the individual calligraphers also vary widely, from the strict and conventional to the idiosyncratic and free, but, taken together, they provide a good general introduction to this longstanding art form.    j All major genres of traditional Chinese paintings are represented in this exhibit — landscape and figure painting, as well as a third group which includes animals, birds, fish, flowers, plants and other small natural objects. Among the more modem and experimental pieces in the exhibit, there are also several paintings which defy any attempt at precise categorization. A separate colored catalogue will be available for each group of 60 works. The entries are by Dr. Shen C.Y. Fu, senior curator of Chinese art at the Freer Gallery of Art and the Arthur M. Sackler Gallery of Asian Art at the Smithsonian Institution. In addition to a general introduction to the exhibition, Fu provides some brief biographical information on each artist, places each work in its historical context, and points out various salient or outstanding features which will add to the viewer’s enjoyment and understanding of the pieces. Complete translations, produced under Fu’s supervision, of the calligraphic texts and the inscriptions on the paintings are also provided. The catalogue describing the 60 art work will be on sale at the exhibit for $10 each.
