Gorbachev a day earlier. “The junta that has come to power will not stop at anything to keep that power,” Russian Federation President Boris Yeltsin told a cheering, waving crowd of more than 150,000 people at the Russian Parliament building. “They understand that things have reached the point that if they lose, they will lose not only their armchairs, but they will be seated on court benches,” said the Russian republic’s president, who has spearheaded resistance to Monday’s overthrow of Gorbachev. In another development, a Soviet Foreign Ministry official said Foreign Minister Alexander Bessmertnykh had taken “sick” after returning from vacation, “but was expected to return to work in a few days.” The coup leaders also claimed Gorbachev, who was overthrown while on vacation in the Crimea, was ill. Few believed it. Resistance to the overthrow, meanwhile, appeared to be spreading. A demonstration in Leningrad drew 200,000 people — many of them heeding a call by Yeltsin to protest the WALNUT 6 629-6400 IU 35 and Walnut Ave Bargain Matinees Indicated by ( ) coup by going on strike — and one in the capital of the Moldavian republic drew an estimated 400,000 people. Gorbachev’s overthrow and the turmoil it has caused in the Soviet Union could endanger the world economy’s fragile recovery but does not appear as disruptive as the Gulfwar, economists say. The events could push up interest rates and make it more difficult for businesses to borrow money to expand production and hire workers. How soon a direct impact will be felt in New Braunfels is questionable, according to two local business men. “It’s too early to tell” was the assessment of both Ken Armke Sr. of Opa’s Haus and Hal Jopling of K&B Liquors. Opa’s Haus, a leading importer of fine collectibles, does handle some Russian-made merchandise. “We do not import directly from Russian as we do from Germany and Switzer* land," Armke said. Because he works through other Importers, he believes it will be several weeks or months before any affect on his supply lines would be known. Jopling noted that Russian vodka “is obtained for American distribution by Pepsi on a barter system." He sees "nothing to make vodka hard to come by" at this point. Long term economic sanctions or changes in grain deals could alter that over time, he said. "The world economy is in a very fragile state in terms of where it is in the cycle. It’s coming out of recession very slowly,” said Leo Doyle, an economist with the London investment firm Kleinwort Grieveson Securities. World economic growth could be crimped by half a percentage point by the latest developments, said Paul Jackson, economist with the investment firm Morgan Stanley International in London. .to LANDA * STATION y-1 RESTAI RANT & UR n Kitchen Op*n IIJI 11.00 Tnt us KXHETKB Dally 7:00 SAO *¥    Daily M Summer Special t Steak & Shrimp *___mslJL Wed. after 5 PM * ¥ ¥ ¥ ¥ ¥ ¥ ¥ ¥ ¥ ¥ ¥ ¥ TERMINATOR 5 JUDGMENT 0X4 O’ SCHWARZENEGGER ® FUL SAT.
