New Braunfels Herald Zeitung (Newspaper) - August 16, 1991, New Braunfels, Texas Religious Focus Page 6 Herald-Z#/fung, New Braunfels, Texas Friday, August 16, 1991 Religion BriefsDo unto others...School reunion SELMA — Parishioners and * parents arc joining present and former students of Our Lady of Perpetual ' Help Church and School in planning a 90th anniversary reunion. It is said that 21 settlers from the arca petitioned their bishop in 1896 for a church of their own. He head their plea and permitted establishment of a mission church in what is now the dommunity of Selma. These settlers banded together to build a small church and school, with the school opening in 1901. ‘ The first teachers were Sisters of * \hc Divine Providence. Then, in 1939, teaching duties were assumed by another order, Sisters of the Incarnate * Word and Blessed Sacrament. ' ’‘‘The school and parish are grateful to these dedicated si tors and lay teachers for their role in building the school to its present state of academic and spiritual excellence,” said reunion organizer Frccda Lapos-Massey. The structure, too, has seen much change — but tradition remains with the cross from the original building i\ow mounted on the current red brick building. The birthday celebration is sci for Sept. 15. Organizers now arc seeking former students so they may be invited to participate. Former students or those with names, addresses or phone numbers of former students are encouraged to contact the Celebration Committee through the parish office, (512) 651-6913.Fish fry CANYON LAKE — Hill County Bible Church of Canyon Lake will host its annual fish fry from 5 to 8:30 p.m. Aug. 31 on Farm-to-Market Road 306 at the Tamarack Shores Subdivision All-you-can-cat servings of fish and all the trimmings will be dished up for $5 for adults and $3 for children. I was sitting on the couch innocently watching “Leave It to Beaver.** It was an episode I hadn’t seen. The Beave is about to run away from home. He and Ward are at odds. Wally is no help, and June is making cookies. The Beave is upstairs packing. He’s really going to do it. He goes downstairs and stands at the door of Ward’s office. Neither wants to break the silence. Somebody speaks, I forget who, and the Beave is heading for die door. “I’m really going,” he says. And his dad says, “OK, son. When you get where you’re going, let us hear from you.” June is hearing everything from behind the kitchen door. She is really steamed. “No, really, Dad, I’m going. I’m really going right now.” And he does. As soon as he is out the door, June is all over Ward. She asks how he could let her little boy go. Ward says he’ll be back before dinner. He isn’t. Now it’s getting dark and still no Beaver. June wants to call the police. She picks up the phone to dial. Ward takes the phone and says, “He’s probably at one of his friend’s.” Ward calls Larry Mondello’s home, and Beaver is there having dinner. Ward tells Larry’s mother to send Chance meetings By the Rev. Kenny Wood "How did you feel when your father didn't come to get you?" Beaver asks. Ward looks down. "I felt pretty bad." "Then why didn't you come get me?" "I guess because I wanted to win so much, I forgot what it felt like to be a little boy." Beaver home after dessert. June takes the phone and tells Mrs. Mondello that she is on her way to get her son. She takes Wally with her. When the three get back home, June goes into the kitchen and Wally goes upstairs. The Beaver is left in the room with his dad, who is reading the newspaper. “Mom said you ran away from home when you were a boy,” the Beave tells him. “Your mother told you that?” “Uh huh. How did you feel when your father didn’t come to get you?” Ward looks down. “I felt pretty bad.” “Then why didn’t you come get me?” “I guess because I wanted to win so much, I forgot what it felt like to be a little boy.” Don’t you forget. “Do unto others as you would have them do unto you.” That means we should give our children what they need, even if we didn’t get it for ourselves.
