Because the transportation of those who write automotive columns can tend toward some fairly exotic machinery, I was, frankly, surprised that I found the Acclaim as pleasant as I did and that I rather regretted seeing it go away. I Finally decided that I grew attached to the little sedan because it 'took care of me. It wasn’t a “pedal to ■the metal” performance machine and 'it wasn’t a big, plush luxury liner. But 'it’s plenty comfortable, it’s plenty .powerful and it has all the amenities ;anyone ever really needs. It’s a good 'looking car you can be proud of owning. In short, the Acclaim provides ^exactly the no fuss kind of transporta-lion most of us need, i Actually, we drove two Acclaims. ' The first was silver with a 5-speed manual transmission and the second was an almost-black red car with an automatic transmission. The first was > member of the manufacturer’s press fleet and the second was loaned me by Amo Becker of Becker Motors in New Braunfels. ; 11 iked the automatic better. * Those who know mc will think that’s a misprint, but it isn’t. ' I normally like to do my own gear shifting, but I found it kind of nice to be able to just kind of sit back in the Acclaim, push the go pedal and relax. . I think the automatic better fits the personality of the Acclaim, and I’ve found that my own demeanor adapts to what I drive, so my theory is that this accounts for my reversal in preference.
