Dingeldein received a standing ovation as he walked to the podium to accept the award from outgoing club president Barry Moore, who termed the honor “the highest award we give” Soon after presenting that and a number of other awards, Moore surrendered the symbolic gavel and the club president's pin to Dennis Hermes, who will serve as the organization’s president through the coming year. Setting the tone for that coming year, Hermes told those assembled for the dinner, “We face many challenges ... but with the history of New Braunfels and with the history of this club, I have no doubt we can meet those challenges.” Hermes went on to say that he is intent on “handing this club over next year to Randy Haugh with the same sense of unity that it has as Barry Moore gives it to me.” Hermes, who recently attended the annual Rotary International convention in Mexico City, said he met Rota-rians from six continents there. Rotary traces its roots to 1905 when three businessmen, one of them Paul Harris, began meeting to seek ways to be of service to their community, Hermes told the group. By 1940 it had spread from this country throughout Europe and South America. Today there are 1.2 million Rota-rians throughout the world. The New Braunfels Rotary Club was formed in 1937, its new president told the group. Among the awards presented by Moore at the banquet were those to: • Ken Frisbic and Randy Haugh for their involvement in the Rotary Benefactor Program; • Delray York, Kathy Meurin, Marion Benson and Bob Dingeldein in recognition of their selection for the club’s “Sparkplug of the Quarter” awards; The club’s 1990 officers and directors each were presented awards. Those included: Dennis Hermes, president elect; Secretary Sue McCoy; Treasurer Ed Shackelford; Executive Secretary Ramona Womack; Bob Dingledein, community service director; John Dierksen, youth services director; Kathy Meurin, club services director; Bob Schi-ma, international services director; Randy Haugh, vocational services director; Roger Johnson, bulletin editor, Arlon Hermes, sergeant at arms; and Don Ferguson, alternate sergeant at arms. The club’s officers for the coming year, installed by club member Fred Willard, who serves as the district governor’s representative to New Braunfels’ three clubs, include: President Dennis Hermes, President Elect Randy Haugh, Treasurer Ed Shackelford, Sergeant at Arms Jack Bremer and Past President Barry Moore. New directors are: Bob Schima, international service; John Dierksen, youth service; Kathy Meurin, vocational service; Delray York, community service; and Bob Hoffman, club service. Dennis Hermes, at left above, accepts the traditional gavel from Barry Moore, signifying the passing of the presidency of the New Braunfels Rotary Club. Moore drew a laugh from club members Thursday evening when he presented members Geneva and Marvin Pustka a “special achievement award for procreation." The Pustkas, both in their 50s, recently learned that they are expecting their fifth child and made the first announcement of that at a meeting of the club.
