A total of 2.4 million reports of child abuse and neglect were recorded by toe nation's child welfare system last year. Child abuse continues to get worse, and our response as a nation has not always been the most effective. According to recent estimates, up to 5,000 children die each year as a direct result of abuse bv a parent or guardian. More than 50 percent of the victims are less than a year old! Abby, please publish this prayer to show that child abuse is everyone's problem, and that we need to work together to break the cycle. A PRAYER FOR CHILDREN “We pray for children who put chocolate fingers everywhere, who like to be tickled, who stomp in puddles and ruin their new pants, who sneak Popsicles before supper, who erase holes in math workbooks, who can never find their shoes. “And we pray for those who stare at photographers from behind barbed wire, who can’t bound in the street in a new pair of sneakers, who never go to the circus, who live in an X-rated world. “We pray for children who bring us sticky kisses and fistfuls of dandelions. who sleep with the dog and bury the goldfish, who hug us in a hurry and forget their lunch money. who cover themselves with Band-Aids and sing off-key, who squeeze toothpaste all over the sink, who slurp their soup. “And we pray for those who never get dessert, who have no sate blanket to drag behind them, who watch their parents watch them die, who can't find any bread to steal, who don't have any rooms to clean up. whose pictures aren't on anybody’s dresser, w hose monsters are real. “We pray for children who spend all their allowance before Tuesday. who throw tantrums in the grocery store and pick at their food, who like ghost stories, who shove dirty clothes under the bed and never rinse the tub, who get visits from the tooth fairy, who don’t like to be kissed in front of the carpool, who squirm in church and scream in the phone, whose tears we sometimes laugh at, and whose smiles can make us cry. “We pray for those whose nightmares come in the daytime, who will eat anything, who aren't spoiled by anybody, who go to bed hungry and cry themselves to sleep, and who live and move, but have no being. "We pray for children who want to be carried and for those who must, for those we never give up on and for those who don't get a second chance. For those we smother ... and for those who will grab the hand of anybody kind enough to offer it." —Ina J. Hughes Abby, please help us erase this national tragedy of child abuse by urging your readers to get involved in their local child abuse prevention effort. Help us to help others to see that a child is too great a gift to abuse. PATRICIA KNIEFEL. DIRECTOR DEAR ABBY: A reader w anted to know why joggers and runners run in the streets instead of on sidewalks. The reasons are varied: There may not be a sidew alk; the sidewalk may not be continuous; the sidewalk may be in poor repair, blocked by low branches, made hazardous by drivers who don’t slow down when backing out of driveways, or be occupied by other pedestrians or small children playing. The sidewalk may be concrete, whereas the street may be blacktop — and therefore a softer surface upon w hich to run. As for runners who run at night, those branches overhanging the sidewalks can be even more hazardous at night when they are obscured by the darkness than iii the daytime when they are just an inconvenience. if those who choose to run for aerobic exercise are to live in harmony with motorists, bicyclists and pedestrians, these suggestions Horoscope By Stella Wilder Born today, you are outgoing and generous, and you are always willing to give time to those around you who require your support You are rarely selfish, but when you are there is nothing that can turn your mind away from yourself. According to the California Department of Motor Vehicles, walkers and joggers should always FACE oncoming traffic. Carrying identification is also important. HOUSTON (AP) — Oil spill cleanup equipment manufacturers say they have learned to work together in the all-but-impossible task of cleaning up the war ravaged Persian Gulf. “Fighting oil spills is like Fighting a war,” said Ove Terling, chief executive of Sweden-based AB Pharos Marine. “As bad as spills have been, it seems inevitable we have to live with them. “We’ve seen the importance of international cooperation. It’s clear no country alone can deal with them.” Pharos, which supplied oil skimmers to the Exxon Valdez effort two years ago, has 48 pieces of equipment now in place in the Persian Gulf. “We are getting better and better. We arc gaining experience. We have fairly good hope we can do better than we have in the past,” Terling said. Bul equipment representatives at the annual Offshore Technology Conference said Monday even with improved technology, it may he impossible to clear the gulf of millions of gallons of oil thai spewed into the waters when Iraq sabotaged Kuwaiti refineries earlier this year. “From the looks of things, it’s sull in the water and at the point where it’s not cleanable,” said Jim Rhodes, sales manager of American Boat & Skimmer Co. of Houston. “It looks like Mother Nature may just have to clean it up.” Frank Meyers, president of Kepner Plastics Fabricators Inc., a Torrance, Calif, manufacturer of containment booms, was not as pessimistic, hut said the job would he difficult.
